Wow. I am teary eyed. I can picture John being there for Lucy. Making sure to comfort her. Making sure to relay her final words to her husband.
Excellent!

ClearingSky chapter 1 . 5/18/2013
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful job. It's a vivid and intimate glimpse into a moment between rescuer and victim and the humanity that flows between them. I'm sure every first responder who's been 'in the business' for any length of time has come across a patient that they feel a particular connection to or kismet with and are perhaps left wondering, 'if life had been different and we'd met under other circumstances, we might have been friends.'

This was a beautiful portrayal of Johnny at his most human moment. Your ability to breathe life to Lucy in such a short time has us all grieving with her, her husband and with Johnny at the kind of loss we know happens all too often.

Excellent job.
kayaklady chapter 1 . 5/16/2013
A very powerful story which is well crafted. I'm not much into poetry but your story has me interested in looking up the piece you quoted.
GageDeSotoFan chapter 1 . 5/15/2013
Very touching story. I am sure many emergency personnel have had to face moments like this. I am in awe of them, the strength and courage to do the job that they do. Thanks for the good read...
Enfleurage chapter 1 . 5/15/2013
This is a profoundly moving story, a glimpse into the moments, highly personal and yet completely professional between a first responder and a patient he knows he cannot save. There's an amazing sense of immediacy, of feeling as if I'm inside that car with Johnny and with Lucy. In less than 2000 words, you sketched a vivid and compelling scene, introduced an original character, vibrant and wonderful and someone I know I'd like, and I grieved with Johnny knowing that her situation was hopeless, weeping as she died.

The paragraph that started "For just the tiniest second, he couldn't tear his gaze away. She had tiny wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and deep laugh-lines around her mouth as though she smiled often, and he found himself wanting to tell her the truth" made this is a truly transcendent read because as Johnny *sees* the unique person that was Lucy, I too felt that I saw her and she became real to me.

Heartfelt and heart breaking, this is a wonderful and insightful portrayal of Gage, and of Gage representing all first responders in that situation.
