I think it very unlikely that they would mistake a woman for a man, even with short hair... Unless Cate is a very ugly woman. No offence, but I just don't like her physical description at all and am having a hard time moving past that in every scene I picture her in.

I just came across this story today and powered through all 35 chapters in one day. I absolutely love it! I saw in the author's note in the last chapter that you've come on some hard times. I wish you the best of luck so that you can weather this storm and once again have the time to continue the tale you've woven so far. Have you ever read the story "Don't Panic" (and its sequel "Ok, NOW Panic") also on this site? You may want to check it out, if you haven't. Quite a wonderful attempt to realistic fall into Middle Earth (LOTR era), and yes, there is a 'wilderness breakdown', and it is something to behold.
