Debrah Clachair chapter 1 . 5/16/2013 Very sweet story so far. I like the characterization of Albus Severus Potter as being a collector of books about his namesakes and a "completist" type of collector (it's not even clear he's reading the books or feels he's missing any information not in the books he already has; he just wants to have a complete collection!). Nice: [But despite all of this, his greatest eccentricity was undoubtedly his obsession with his namesakes. Albus Potter owned what was probably the largest library of books based on the lives of Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape.][His parents were simply happy that he hadn't developed an obsession with potions, or Muggle sweets.] I like that Scorpius Malfoy is the calm, thoughtful one of the two: [Scorpius interjected, voice of reason as usual.] Nice plotting for this type of a story. Within this scene, this bit emphasizes the significance of Scorpius's gift: [Apart from the noticeable lack of that one book, Al had everything he could have asked for in front of him.] When things are good but not quite perfect, Scorpius is there to "complete" him. And this is a good hook for the reader to anticipate fun to come: ["Do you really think I'm going to tell you guys?" Scorpius asked disbelievingly. "That's like giving you'll a free pass to meddle in it."] A few things in the relationships confused me for a moment: Paragraph 1 - identify the "interhouse friendship" immediately as Rose Weasley. I read back and forth a few times because at first I thought the sentence was referring to Scorpius and he'd been sorted into Gryffindor until I read "the two Slytherin boys" and sorted it out. Paragraph 2 - "Weasley-Potter" feuds would be Weasleys and Potters fighting with one another. But Al is a Weasley-Potter, right? I'm confused. Two SPaGs: Paragraph 28, add a question mark as follows: "you're no fun, you realize that, right?" Al asked... Paragraph 58: missing word here: "...You need to tell him so that can see what we all do!" One suggestion: in paragraph 40, "gone to to get his" is perfectly okay grammar but might be easier to read if one of the "to" prepositions was changed, e.g., "...gone through to get his..." |
Estoma chapter 4 . 5/16/2013 Well, what a sweet conclusion to the story! You've made your characters so realistic and likeable that I am genuinely happy for them to get together like this. The bit directly after the first kiss was quite gorgeous, when they pulled apart and said 'hey' to each other. Reminds me an awful lot of the first time I pashed someone. You've captured that surprise and happiness really well. Gorgeous! Just a few little points I want to make: You don't really need this here: 'very confused at what was happening around him.' Because you already indicate that Albus is confused by him asking a question. '...but unfortunately, their bodies needed oxygen, so they were forced to separate.' I find this a bit unrealistic. You could use another reason for them separating, because you breathe through your nose when you're making out, unless you have a cold, in which case you probably shouldn't be making out :) Also, Al cups Scor's face, but Scor still doesn't realise Al feels for him? I would imagine that a boy touching another like that would certainly indicate romantic feelings for each other. Maybe you could mix it up a bit so Scor doesn't seem quite so surprised to find Al loves him, when Al is cupping his face already? Just a lovely little story, so well done :) |
Estoma chapter 3 . 5/15/2013 Always a pleasure to review your stories; I'm getting quite swept up in this story. Ah, I like that you told us why the book was so hard to get hold of. Nice detail there. Aha! Scor highlighted the sections, very nice touch there. Very nice indeed. I was wondering if he would have left a note or something in the book, but the way you have done it here is very good! Just a few points: 'As soon as Astronomy got over...' Instead of 'got over' I would say 'finished' or something similar. Sounds a tad more professional. "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore." Book titles are usually in italics. 'Though mostly composed of malicious lies, Rita Skeeter's writing really helped show how stupid rumours could spread easily through the influence of one writer, and have the power to change how history viewed someone.' I am not sure exactly what it is, but I find this sentence quite awkward. Maybe it is a bit too long? Also about history viewing someone, I don't feel that is quite the right phrasing. Perhaps 'how someone is viewed in history' might sound a bit better? |
Verran chapter 1 . 5/15/2013 I like your light-hearted, no nonsense introduction. It had the style of an old-fashioned fairytale about it, as if it were being told verbally, not read. It gave us a good insight into Albus's character in an entertaining narrative, without it feeling like an infodump. The plot was simple - he wanted a book that was almost impossible to get, and Scorpius got it for him for his birthday. I got a good feel for the characters, and the atmosphere of the party. The only thing I would say, though, is although the dialogue was very strong throughout, I think that the tension of the scene after Albus left could be conveyed better with a little more descriptive action when the characters speak. Otherwise, a good, entertaining read. |
Estoma chapter 2 . 5/15/2013 Always happy to review one of your stories! I feel like, though this chapter was still a good one, it is a bit more of a filler. Just my opinion. Still enjoyable to read of course. I liked your dialogue in this chapter. It really felt realistic. I can imagine kids of that age speaking like this. It can be hard to make your characters speak in a way that is natural, but you've managed to do it well. Lysander using 'guys' is a good touch, it is the vernacular of that age group. Also when Rose says 'oh my god' that's very well used by their age group too! Also, it's good the way you put words in italics in the dialogue to show the emphasis, and I feel that you've used these correctly in each instance which is really good. Like here for example: "Guys, can we please not talk about this?" Just here: 'Rose cried; irritation evident in every word.' I don't think you need the semi colon, I think comma would be better in this situation. Good chapter, as always! Cheers. |
Kimka333 chapter 3 . 5/12/2013 Cliffhanger! I so can't wait for the next chapter. Please update soon! :D |
