I agree with the Hichigo and Ichigo being one and the same. Technically speaking, all hollows were derived from the same soul, as you said, just the darker parts, mostly the reasons they didn't move on to the 'bright light'.. and additionally, Ichigo's hollow was created because of the need to save Rukia.

Angsty, but as long as I squint I can see fluff. :3

Your explanation makes a lot of logical sense! However I also see the justification behind those other fics because at many times, the hollow doesn't want to accept that he is the horse- he wants to be King forcefully. When the hollow is trying to lock out Ichigo for good and violently claim Rukia as his only, that's the part I don't think she can stand for.
