Beautifully bittersweet, making their parting harder than ever but infinitely more satisfying (oh, that final sentence!), while evoking the peace and release that Alex will experience inside the pub even as she misses him, the knowledge that Gene's devotion to duty will not be eternal, and the continually unfulfilled passion that has dogged them summed up in that wonderful phrase "They kissed like the lovers they never were, had always been." Wonderful, just wonderful.

So good. Sometimes I want to be able to tell someone that perfect line that I enjoyed in a story. Well this story has too many to point out. Aching, and poignant, and lovely. Thank you.

This was absolutely gorgeous and just what I was looking for when I decided to have a wander over to the archives again! I could feel every emotion and your descriptions were so beautiful. 'They kissed like the lovers they never were, had always been' - the bittersweetness of that line took my breath away. :)

I loved this so much.

It's hard to do justice to this story because it touches on all the right notes - Gene's sense of duty, Alex's sense of unfinished business, all that went unspoken and undone between them or, as you put it, "The almost embraces, the never finished dates, the longing barely disguised by crude innuendos and brushed aside laughter...They kissed like the lovers they never were, had always been."

You've kept the tone between them just right - a bit of frustration, bit of hope, a lot of finished business just with the right words and touches. Lovely.

Finally getting the chance to catch up with some fic reading, and I'm so glad. That was lovely, SC1 - almost makes the ending bearable! Hope you write more soon. :)
