Crazy theory, but as far as I know, My Neighbor Totoro was based on Miyazaki-san's childhood, down to his sick mother. Still, I love spooky twists!

This did change my view on this tale a bit. I read up on it, and it actually makes sense. It even fits in with the story if you take out the ending credits.

This is a good theory, just there's one hole in the plot. If you watch closely, you see Mei putting her shoes on before she leaves to run off. The shoes she puts on are different to the one Nanny finds in the pond.

i like this story, i really do. i like the concept, but i dearly hope that no one actually believes this theory. It really stuck me when you said that there was a theory that Totoro was a death god, and that by looking at him you will die soon. This disturbed me to no end, considering you see him though out the film, and the fact that his movies ending music is the cheeryist song i've ever heard without it being creepy. and if it was the case( i did read the A/N btw), which is clearly not, the movie would get much much much darker at the climax. I think its just a stroke of Studio Ghibli genisis like Ponyo or Nausica of the valley of the wind, pure original genisis.

Very morbid, I love anything with a dark twist on it :D Very well done, even with not seeing the movie you made it possible for me to follow along easily enough.

Defiantly a fine read. I mean, the explanation as to why Mei fell into the pond was a bit of a stretch, but I'll go along with it.

I just heard about this legend. Course, there's too much in the movie to make this theory real. One I think you forgot to mention was the sandal they found in the pond wasn't Mei's, as the sandal they find and Mei's sandals looked completely different. Mei's sandal has two parallel red stripes, but the pond sandal has two crossed red stripes and a little flower/dot on it. However, out of my own curiosity, I will read on.
