Doesnt the ministry of magic have elevators (lifts)? If yes then surely Ron has been on on and knows how it works? His reaction to the old lady disappearing is a bit over the top, IMO.

If he has not been on an elevator, then Argur has been very remiss for not teaching his kids abiout his job. I guesss there is no such thing as "take your child to work" day in the wizarding world!

No doubt math is used in Potions, though-you have to calculate quantities of ingredients (or at least I hope they do) depending on how much of a potion you're making, as there are different sizes of cauldrons.
