I think it would make a little more sense if there was a coma after 'asked':

I suppose if one were looking to explain what happened here, you could say that mutant genetic material carries low level mutagenic properties, and that being impregnated by a mutant turtle, April has become at least part turtle, despite maintaining the outward appearance of a human.
