I liked the mentioning of her being just a 'stupid ape' [although it was maybe too much... Although it also seemed a way for him to reassure himself it's true.] and just seeing how she was a breath of fresh air for him, in a way.
Considering you - we, in general - can't really know exactly what it is he was thinking at those moments, I'd say you did a good job characterising him.
