Well, you're probably long off this website and may never read this review, but I shall review for my own sanity if nothing else.

I'm very conflicted about this story. On one hand, I read it all in the span of two days, something I'm not apt to do with fanfiction - or anything, really. The prose sucked me in start to finish, and your characterizations were admirable. On the other hand, the conclusion fell short and there was a lot of cushioning done to put Gon and Killua in a situation where they would be forced to trust each other.

I had very different notions about this story based on its summary and the amount of attention it's gotten over the years, and... I'm pretty disappointed in it narrative-wise. I would have suspected that a full-on Zoldyck heir Killua would have been less prone to wasting time when it came to catching his prey (such as trying to discern his facial features in the hotel) when he could just throw a weapon, attack with Nen, use Godspeed and be done with it. I understood, for the first few times I saw that there might be an opening for attack, that you explained it as Gon always had his guard up in the hotel, and caught Killua by surprise in the street, and then he was alerted to Killua's presence on the ship, but after that... I feel like it was too easy. If Killua had moved to attack Gon and chosen against it or been warded off by Gon's counterattack on the island, that would have made sense, but... Killua being deterred by his pain? I really doubt that would matter to him - I'm sure he's endured worse than a concussed head, and at the very least would know how to keep his mind sharp to avoid being weakened much by such a wound.

The use of the tracker at the base of Killua's neck was an interesting addition as well. I would have expected that you would use something like Killua's needle (presuming he never removed it in this AU) to make Killua vulnerable, or question his loyalty to the Zoldyck Family, though I understand the needle is a lot more complicated than a tracker that stops you from... running away? Isn't that what the needle was meant to be for?
(Also, the idea that Killua becomes a robot who forgets everything he does whenever he kills/"flips his switch"... I doubt that as well. It seems more like an intense focus on the kill; I didn't particularly like it when the Hunter x Hunter play portrayed as such either, but I guess Togashi hasn't really explained how exactly the needle worked, so... maybe that's more of a pet peeve of mine.)

There were many plot points that were introduced and forgotten as well to make way for the sequel. Illumi's survival, Gon's guilt in letting everyone on the ship die despite being a Hunter (like, where's Kite in this AU?), Kurapika's appearance (though you mentioned that one so I'm less concerned with it), the Jungle/Mr. Drindl, Ging's exact goal...? It's far from a cohesive story.

And yet, despite all of these criticisms... what you accomplished here through your eloquence - in how you conveyed the characters and situations, so professional and methodical - I can't help but admire it. Even though I didn't agree with many of the pivotal narrative points, as others have mentioned, your depiction of Gon and Killua's relationship and personalities was rather realistic and I loved their chemistry. This wasn't the fic I expected, but what you did you executed well, and it kept me reading - which is rare when I don't agree with so much of the plot/characterizations. Your writing style really hooked me on this and made this fic what it is.

Normally, a situation like being stranded on an island and being forced to get to know each other for a fic with this type of premise would make me roll my eyes, and I was and am skeptical of what you did with it, but at the same time, what you did was... good. So much of what is good about this fic can be attributed to your writing style, to your ability to eloquently mention snippets of character motivations, flashbacks, setting, dialogue, and inner thoughts so naturally, which conveyed your deep understanding of the fic and the topic on a level that I, as a reader, couldn't put my finger on.

And I applaud you for that, and I owe it to you for inspiring me anew in my own fanfiction. You definitely took the literary route than the fanservice-y one, and I really respect that. So... Thank you for writing this. I hope you're achieving your dreams in whatever you do.
