Reviews for The Pirate, The Raven, and His Swan
NarrehStylan chapter 1 . 4/25
this was so amazing! ive always thought ab what makes killian's love for emma different than what he had with Milah and I think this was showed that. When Killian met Emma, she didn't just restore who he was when he began his quest for revenge but she made him a hero. I love how it was being with Emma that brought out the best version of himself. Similarly, I love how Killian brought out the best version of Emma. You can see the difference between season 5 and season 6 with Emma. He managed to break down her armour and she looks so much happier; being with him has allowed her to believe (much like what Henry did). I also just really appreciate the fact that while Milah gave up Bae to give her HER best chance, while Emma gave Henry up to give him HIS best chance.

Lena chapter 1 . 3/26/2013
I love how explained the differences between Milah and Emma and how their loves for Killian differ, particularly in reality of True Love.

I'll be honest and admit I have never been a Milah fan. I found her weak, whiny, shallow, incrediable selfish and immature, and very narrow-minded along with callous and abusive to those who loved her. I don't see her as totally evil or corrupt and she certainly didn't deserve her fate, (in fact no one deserves to have their heart ripped out), but at the sametime I do understand the anger and hurt that pushed Rum's Dark One-intisifyed emotions to do that to her. She had no right to treat him the way she did, and she certainly should not have abandoned Bae. If she wanted to be with Hook or travel, fine, but she could have also made an effort to visit her son and provide for him finacally, or atleast ask about him. From what little we saw of her, Milah was certainly living it up as Hook's girlfriend/mistress/main squeeze/Pirate Queen/ so I don't see why she had to cutoff all contact with her son.

Granted, she wasn't really playing any sort of motherly role with him even when she was around, and I never really get the sense that Little Bae ever was sure that Milah loved or even cared about him. I see her sort of pushing him away most of the time, and only acknowledging his existence when it was convient for her, when she needed someone's attention, or when she was forced to, like him stepping into the tavern and alerting Hook and his crew not only was Milah married, but she also had a kid that she had been neglecting all the hours she had been carousing with them. While she does seem somewhat guilty by her conduct, I also get an even stronger sense of embrassment that she's worried how her newfound 'friends' will perchieve her now that it's out she's a mom, particulary Killian, who seems rather guilty, for once, that this child had been lefted alone, while his mother and him have been partying and bullying his father, who seems to be the only caring parent this kid's got. Makes me wonder if Killian's childhood was somewhat similar in some aspects.

Then there's the whole Killian/Milah relationship vs. Killian/Emma relationship. I agree with you the big appeal about Hook for Milah was his looks, his wealth, and above all, the freedom and responsibility-free lifestyle he represented to her. Far as I can tell Milah had always been looking for an escape when things get rough, and she wasn't the type who realized real life and real love are always hard and require attention, duty, and sacrifice, something Emma knows far too much about. Like you stated, Milah loved Killian Jones the Pirate, who was a living embodiement of freedom and adventure for her, almost like a groupie loving their favorite rock star, while Emma is attracted to Killian Jones the Man, who is all sort of crazy contridictions and complications that she doesn't need or want, but still she knows there's something there. As for Hook, I never got a sense during that scene in the bar that he viewed Milah as anything more that pretty face to pass the night with. Unlike with his first meeting with Emma, where he can barely take his eyes off of her and he seems innately, primally, drawn to every move she makes and the fact she constantly besting and confusing him, his attraction to Milah seems purely physical, and further more a physical attraction that he can take or leave; she is not a challenge like Emma.

Did Hook love Milah, yes, but in a very first-love-she's there-and-its-all-good-no-conflict-sort of way. Their life together consisted of no real responsibilties, ties, or hardships, and because Milah was unwilling to deal with her own problems that ment Hook could 'recuse' her as her 'saviour,' something that no doubt stroked his ego. Plus, considering Hook's all-about-me nature, he might have liked Milah insisting on having no one in her life but him. Maybe due to his past he liked not having to share Milah with anyone else including her own child. Neither Milah nor Hook ever grew as people during their relationship. Yes, they had a certain loyalty for each other, but I never get as sense of them have some deep mature connection, nor did their personalities improve through their relationship; their motto seem to be 'we're 'inlove' so who cares about anyone else involved. we can do whatever we want, regardless of anyone else's pain.' I personlly do not find it romatic when a couple is willing to lie about a woman dying of sexual torture and abuse just so she won't have to face her distraught husband and son.

With Emma and Hook it is a totally different ballgame. For one, Hook is not the same man he was 300 years ago. He darker, more dangerous, more unstable, yet also more mature and thoughtful. He's still very selfish and he definitly still seeking revenge, yet his interactions with Emma show a man who is starting to question his choices and his identity. He also seems to want to know what makes Emma tick, and why she is so guarded. I also think he is intrigued with Emma's devotion to Henry, particulary how much she's willing to fight to get home to him. Up until Emma, his knowledge of mothers is that they leave or abuse their children: Milah lefted Bae, the Lost Boys were abandoned by their parents, and Cora is trying to emotionally control Regina, not to mention Killian's own mother may have been less than steller. But Emma she's a fighter and go-getter, something he admires, yet surprisingly, something his last love was not. He sees her determination to not only get home, but also the fact that she will not let him get away with his actions, no matter what she feels for him. Emma has her own life, and if Hook wants to be apart of it, he is going to have to become a man worth being with. She won't baby him or make excuses and she not leaving her family or other people who need her. True love is about growing as a person; it's about finding your best self; and facing struggle which is always a componet of any great love story. That is the story of Emma Swan and Killian Jones.
