Yes. Just yes. I am suddenly in love with the idea that he plays the piano. Maybe because I can understand. Whenever I have loads of feels, my outlet is usually to write, but sometimes that just doesn't work and the mindlessness of attacking the piano keys is the perfect reprieve. Unfortunately, despite playing for over a decade, I'm not actually good enough to achieve quite the level of catharsis that I'm usually looking for.

ANYWAY. This was absolutely fantastic. A little bit sad when you think about all the shit that came after this moment because his happy bubble got thoroughly popped, I'm sure, but properly beautiful to read.

Great story! I always wondered what it would be like to have Damon contemplating that wonderful night he and Elena shared by doing something actually productive like singing or even better! Playing the piano.

Right from the beginning it was really, really amusing. Damon struggling to find the correct word? It was so cute and hilarious at the same time. I'd still go with making love, though. My inner dormant romantic. Also, the "right" factor. You know how to kill your readers with one word.

Happy Damon! It's always awesome to see it on the show or in fanfiction. No need to dwell on that, because you know how I feel about happy Damon. And we talked that he loves just being with Elena, so I'll just sit here and smile happily at his happy place in your fic.

Of course, Damon would make fun of himself. That's so him.

It's also very Damon to describe his life in the most crude way possible. I liked that part. He doesn't dwell on how unhappy he was, he just states the facts and it sounds like he doesn't really care about any of those things. And even if he does, where he is right now made all that stuff worth it.

Loved that moment where you describe Damon's father, because it's both crude (which, typical Damon) and revealing, and it works incredibly well with what we've seen and what we know from canon.

Ouch. Really, ouch. That moment when Damon plays the piano and it's out of tune? That's painful. I'm telling you, painful. If I had vampire hearing while doing it, I'd probably die. I'm being dramatic, but it's just such a wonderful moment that I couldn't help it.

Then, your description of Damon's emotions. I've always claimed that you get Damon better than anyone I know, so it's perfect. Also, I find it quite believable that he would think it liberating to play the piano, that he'd consider it a way to vent his emotions. Works. The forgetting-everything thing works, too. From my experience, anyway.

"I had Katherine, but he only had blood." - LOVE this phrase. Such an interesting view. While his magnified over-the-top love for Katherine caused him so much pain and heartbreak, it's such a great point that it was also what gave him a reason to live. Like I said, you get this guy.

I love the way you write about history. One would think you lived through all of it. Like I told you, I'm always so afraid to write about anything historical, but you're really really good at it. I dunno what you do to make it so believable, but it is. (Reminded me of your fic about Damon at war.)

Then you insert some German words and because I'm self-absorbed I'll consider that a shoutout to me.

I liked the part about Gabriele, because it's also believable. From what we've seen, Damon, as much as he claims to be a loner and all, seeks communication. He genuinely likes people even if they irritate him most of the time and even if he won't ever admit it. He gets attached quite easily, despite his reputation of a tough guy.

And of course, Damon keeps making fun of his past, even though he doesn't really regret it.

That Bieber reference at the end made me laugh. And shudder. And then laugh again.

It's so sweet and tragic, the way Damon sees himself as someone who destroys everything, but also that he recognizes how he's different with Elena and how he could share this part of himself with her, the part that not many people ever got to see.

Okay, enough said, I guess. Obviously, I loved it.

"I should be off de-murderfying Jeremy and shaking down Professor Shane and making sure Stefan hasn't taken a long stroll in the sunshine without his ring. Instead, here I am sitting at the piano..." Great way to show the magnitude of the effect Elena's choice had on he. For once he is driven to set aside the to do list that is constantly playing in Damon's head.

Great juxtaposition of the harsh language of present day Damon ( gigantic puss, snipped of my balls etc) against the over the top romanticism of 1864 Damon (cocking it up, dastardly fate But lo-! The sun would rise one day).

"I want to puke just thinking about that guy." Sorry Damon, but that guy is alive and well. He just needed someone to finally choose him.

"I had something Stefan didn't: a reason to live. I had Katherine, but he only had blood. I left him to his love while I waited for mine." Sad how hollow both loves turned out to be.

Brilliant idea allowing the piano to express the music in Damon's heart.
