Good story!
susieque65 chapter 6 . 2/13/2016
This is one of the most interesting stories I've read so far. This story was beautiful and your references to past episodes was superb. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I couldn't help but cry on several occasions. One question, does Martha ever find them again? Just wondering. You are very talented and I will look forward to reading your other stories.
EC chapter 4 . 7/29/2015
Interesting concept, but there are some details that bother me. Running afoul of the Spanish Inquisition is believable enough, given that he would only have to have been in a less-than-tight-knit community in Spain and made a couple of enemies willing to finger him as a heretic, lapsed converso, or something else that fell under the heading of socially or spiritually dangerous. However, for Marcus to be excommunicated for what he /was/, the Church would first have to /know/ what he was. How do they know that? Did he tell them? Why? And what exactly does the Church think Immortals are, anyway? Any single example might be presumed to be witchcraft, but if the Church were aware of them as a wider phenomenon, as you seem to suggest, they would feel compelled to come up with theories about what they are and where they came from. Any furor of "Burn the _!" would come from whatever they believed Immortals to be. If they excommunicated Castle/Marcus, it would tend to imply not only that they think he's done something wrong but that its something they think he can and should /stop/ doing. So, what do they think he did wrong?

This is not precisely a critisim, but the Salem Witch Trials involved such a small number of people in comparison to something like the Spanish Inquisition that it seems less believable that Castle/Marcus could have ended up in the middle of it, especially when listed alongside the Spanish Inquisition and, presumably, the German witch craze. Besides, what would a Catholic be doing in the middle of a bunch of Puritans? If he were in the New World at the time, his religious affiliation would make him more likely to have come over with the French or the Spanish - and you already implied that he was living in Spain at one point. Yet, culturally, he has taken on a more Anglo identity - was he living in England at one point or only ever in the Colonies?

Additionally, you made a bit of a chronological error. You have Castle/Marcus dying in a battle that occured in 9 AD, yet being raised from childhood as a Christian. Christ Himself was not crucified until the early 30's AD, so either you have to give up the Legio XIX aspect, or make him into a later convert.

So, engaging story, but it could have been worked out in a bit more detail.

BigKahuna chapter 6 . 3/11/2014
Normally I hate stories going more than 20 chapters but you really should have gone for that with this one. Six was just too short.
BigKahuna chapter 5 . 3/11/2014
Thank you. You should have stretched out his past for 20 chapters. This is great stuff

MsMorg chapter 6 . 1/27/2014
Well... I liked it.

What can I possibly say that hasn't been said before? It was well rounded, interesting, well-written, a touch sad, and a touch happy. Beyond all that though, it hit on two things I love the most - Highlander and Castle ... As far as TV goes, there aren't many other shows I hold in such esteem, and here you've gone and combined them.
Though at times I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information being thrown at me about Ancient Rome... That's not really a bad thing, I'm just not a huge history buff... :P
You done good, you done good.

A very interesting story...
Cymru64 chapter 6 . 9/6/2013
What a very unusual story but, absolutely brilliant. I love SI-FI/Fantasy books and read them a lot but you have cleverly combined both. This is really a great story and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Thank you. Brilliant. Cymru64
RaptorChicky chapter 3 . 7/24/2013
Very good read so far, but one nitpick (or 2), and its kind of a big one... Castle was born before Christ, so there is NO WAY his mother could have raised him as a Christian and Castle would've be about what at his 1st death...in his early 20s...and Christ didn't start his preaching until he was 30, and nevermind that Christianity didn't really come out into the open until the early AD 300's, when the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to the religion and made this once frowned upon religion safe to practice. I can see Castle converting later on in life, but he wouldn't be practicing before his 1st death. My OCD is really twitching at this discrepancy and its kind of detracting from the rest of the story... I really hope you come back and fix it.
Also, how could he keep his immortality a secret from Martha? Unless you have it explained somewhere in chapters 4 through 6, I can't see any way she'd accept him as a son she gave birth to. It wouldn't be hard to pass it off w/ Alexis...Meredith could've been messing around on the side...but I really can't see Castle pulling the wool over Martha's eyes...
Village-Mystic chapter 2 . 4/5/2013
Castle the public figure author is one of 2 immortals left? Really? Or just of those who he knows?
