Reviews for The Last Leaf of Autumn
TolkienScholar chapter 1 . 9/8/2017
I enjoyed the imagery you put into this piece. It's a common image, leaves falling and winter representing death, but it's very apt given the scene where this starts. I liked the image of Carl getting to the top of the hill, "Triumphant," only to discover that she couldn't make it up with him. And I think the best bit in the whole poem is

"There are more machines
more wires
more tubes
But then there's less of her."

This really captures the dehumanizing effect that medical treatments can have, especially when it's clear there's no way the person will ever recover and they're just existing rather than living. You see them becoming less and less the people you remember and love. In a way, it's almost sadder than when they're gone.

I've always loved the relationship between Carl and Ellie, because I think it's one of the few times when Disney got away from the romantic, fluttery view of love and talked about what real, lasting love actually looks like. Your poem captures that spirit very well. Well done!

PhantasyPhan13 chapter 1 . 12/27/2013
This is lovely! Up is such a beautiful and heartbreaking movie, and this breathtaking poem completely captures the sadness and love that fill the movie. The leaf metaphor was a wonderful way to describe Ellie's life and Carl's love for her. I really can't point out any mistakes because this is a little masterpiece, and I mean that completely and honestly. To be honest, I think that Up is one of those movies (or any kind of art) that are so amazing that fanfiction can't really do it justice. But your poem completely honors the movie and captures its spirit perfectly. Please do contine to write immortal and gorgeous poems such as this one, because I honestly think you could publish a book of poetry with this sort of skill and grace in writing.

Christopher Scott chapter 1 . 10/1/2012
Nicely done, Ms. Esposito. The emotions in this piece were well done, and the bookends of the leaf falling were a perfect metaphor. I will tell you what you won once I've gone through all the entries. Truly, Christopher Scott: A Gentleman Thief
