Not a bad oneshot. I like Lestrade trying to make Sherlock feel better and it all being sort of awkward and full of subtext since Sherlock doesn't express feelings too well. I also liked the fact that Sherlock knew the tobacco ash by number and that Lestrade actually deduced a few things about Sherlock! You did a good job with the prickly atmosphere - I'd like to know what John said, though. If he said something on the show I don't recall it, so I spent pretty much the entire fic wondering what the heck he said and being disappointed when it was never brought up. Lestrade saying that he quit smoking cigarettes too was a nice touch, and I really liked Sherlock's blank reaction in regards to why his father would be proud of him. Lestrade saying that he was proud of Sherlock was nice, of course, although the ending seemed a bit abrupt. Anyway, that was entertaining. Pretty well done.

Really well written :) I love this whole thing, all the detailing, and the relationship between Sherlock and Lestrade feels perfect to me. I honestly got goosebumps on the last line. Fantastic!
Is it in the original stories that his father died when he was eight? I have read them, but I can't really remember if that came up.
