I really enjoyed this story. I love seeing J/K as parents of young adults, and seeing them with such good relationships with their grown kids. In comparing to your "Beyond Definition" story, I can imagine that in this version, Kathryn's relationship to her adult daughter is less contentious and more straightforwardly loving because Kathryn has been more at peace the last 30 years in this story. I liked the bit about Alicia trying to assuage her mother's feelings of responsibility and "She might as well try to stop the tide." Also how the kids and Kathryn are going around behind Chakotay's back to work on this. I can't believe that any historian would let a newly discovered 400-year-old box of artifacts out of the archives, or that a grad student would get permission straight from a dean for anything, but hey, who knows how university admin will work in the 24th century, so I can ignore that kind of thing. I really wonder how the pair of them stranded in the 21st century would have decided which technologies were OK to release. The whole boat trip scene is really fun. I love how both Chakotay and Alicia know how to deal with Kathryn when she's heading toward depression, and recognize that immediately. And the final part of the story, with the very caring romance scene, and then Kathryn finally making her peace with everything, are just wonderful. Thanks for this happy view on their long-term lives.

Oh, this is deliciously romantic.
You handled that muddled thing that is time travel with ease. I agree with Kathryn that it’s enough to drive you bonkers, but this story was simply straight forward to keep all the “what ifs” at bay.
It’s just like Kathryn to not let something go, and those lost twenty minutes with the “lost” Kathryn and Chakotay is something I can totally see her determined to uncover.
I like that you slowly unveiled who her husband was (like there was any doubt, but it was nice to have it unravel like that). Their children (twins!) are a great mixture of their parents: steely resolve and yet flexible approaches to get things done. I like that the family is close to the Paris family through all these years.
The fates of Kathryn Jane Wayman and Jack Ortiz are never clearly defined, and I like that. We get a clear enough picture of what their life was like, and how it was a mixture of sadness (trapped forever in the past) and yet peaceful (being together).
I prayed the painting would be discovered, and I was thrilled to see it was! And of course it was of New Earth. It’s very appropriate subject matter – them alone on an isolated planet, them alone centuries removed from their home.
The money line for me was “"Kathryn, I'm not going to feel sorry for any Chakotay who gets to live his life next to you." /sigh/ It just proves that the only timeline in which Kathryn and Chakotay don’t end up together is in the show writers’ (or Kate Mulgrew’s) heads.

Gosh Mizzy. That had to be the best overall story plot I've encountered in a LONG time. The concept of Braxton doing what he did coupled with the end results...in so many regards, that was literary brilliance, my dear. So original. This was a brain tickler and a fulfilling joy to read because of it. Well done!
