Sad to think that Gene could end up turning into a careless (but NOT corrupt) version of Wilson, but I love the idea of Alex appearing as his guardian angel to lead him away to a better world, and the repartee with a Cruella-haired Keats is a joy, especially 'You're in danger of turning into a Dalek Jim and 'He's trying to blow your roof off but I'm holding it on. He'll soon get tired.' And Keats is defeated again at the end, lovely.

Great little story. I'd love to see an A2A movie set in the 90s and ending up pretty much the way you wrote it! :)

Of course now I'm going to have to watch the episode in question again and see if I see what you saw. In any event, I like that you refer back to a somewhat neglected episode in the guv's time at Fenchurch East and that you introduce Keats to the bargain (Good descriptions of Jimbo, sights, sounds, general aura).

Yours is the first post-series 3 story I've read that sends Alex out of the Railway Arms to fetch Gene...and in a golden light. I do like to think of her as his angel, and I agree that someone has to remain behind in Fenchurch East, watching over things there.

I do love an unexpected one-off story.

It is intriguing to wonder what happened to Gene next and alas your story does seem to be the most likely outcome in terms of forgetting and gradually sinking into drink and depression. Loved the use of 'She' - such a cheesy song but fits right in here and the lyrics quite appropriate for Alex. Keats' frustrated impotence when Alex reappears is a delight to behold :-)

I couldn't help but feel that your writing here was a little bit stilted, but at the same time, it was very enjoyable and I liked the ending especially. Could have done with being a bit longer, but that's not particularly important.
