Reviews for Honor Among Thieves: The Unwilling Nightingale
kadybug srf chapter 1 . 8/5
But. TYYYYYY.

I have never once in my life wanted to write a fanfic of a fanfic. That, in itself, is a feat. I adored this story, and I will definitely keep my eye out on anything else you jave done/will do in a fandom I love.

But damn, my heart hurts right now. Well done, and (in the loving words of a fan who's close to tears) how dare you?

Definitely going to be rereading this one.

Btw, the hero of Kvatch became Sheogorath at the end of shivering isles. I hate to be that guy who’s annoying about the lore, butttttt I’m that guy, sorry

Hi there! A friend of mine who has also written for stories here recommended this story to me, so I finally went ahead and began reading Honor Among Thieves over the course of a week or a week and a half, during breaks at work. What a wonderful story you’ve written, I must say! There were some things here and there I would have done differently, certainly, but you’ve definitely written a nice story full of emotion and character development. I haven’t written much for my one big Skyrim
fanfic here in a good long while, having burnt myself out working too hard and worrying too much, but reading your story certainly has given me some drive to go back to writing for it; I’m over 500k words in already, I can’t just let it die can I? So thank you for the memorable story, as well as the inspiration. :)

Thank you for such a wonderful story. I remember reading it about a year ago and loving it- and I'm back, and love it even more. Brynjolf's and Tiberia's relationship was beautifully characterised yet realistic for their circumstances. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried at the ending, even though I knew that it was coming. It was an honour to read such a great work of art, and I thank you for sharing your talent. :)

I can't believe it but it's been over two years since I started reading your story. I somehow managed to forget about it after a really stressful period of my life so now I got back to it and finished it. And to express my opinion...

I really love your headcanon. The way you made the daedric magic work without drastic changes to the lore is amazing. I also love the blood bonds and such that help add depth to the story, and your characters are written out nicely and very naturally. I also love how everything is entwined, even though it sometimes feels a bit too much (like, the kind of exaggerated coincidence that is just too much to believe).

The writing itself is very pleasant to read and the dialogues feel quite natural.

But...

This is just my opinion, but the ending was just too forced in my opinion. I know you planned for Ty to die right from the start. I would have probably guessed by the time Farkas caught on (had I not read the reviews previously like a total fool). But it feels kinda like Eragon. There was a prophecy and all, but in the end, it had no real meaning besides "I know what's going to happen to me". When it comes to Tiberia, it feels like she simply decided to die while she didn't have to. In all honestly, if she didn't die, literally nothing would have changed in the story. It would have ended the same except that she wouldn't have died. There was no real exchange, no real wager. Just... "it's my destiny to die now... well, why fight it when I know anyway?" It is honestly unnerving. I don't mind death of main characters in stories, but I do mind when the death is meaningless.

Another thing is the length. Perhaps some readers prefer otherwise. To me, the way you extended the Whiterun arc and included all kinds of side stories and details that had pretty much nothing to do with the main plot felt a bit sloppy. I hate when I fail to finish a story, but yours tended to be kind of exhausting the longer it dragged. All in all, you started off amazing, but it feels like you got a bit tired of it over the time and just decided to put every bit of detail and idea you could think of without considering whether there's actually a suitable place for it (there's a reason authors tend to cut out huge parts of their own works after reviewing them).

And third and the last... the fifth era. That's just... a big no-no for me. I mean, what has Tiberia done to really change the world? She won one big battle. Yes, she defeated Alduin, but she didn't actually change anything. The political situation stayed the same. Not even Skyrim ended up entirely free - the Empire stayed. Titus Mede II was indeed killed, but that didn't change the era in-game. The last time the era had changed was when the Septim dynasty had died out, and that was something that entirely changed the whole of Tamriel. Nothing of the sort happened here, so changing of era makes absolutely no sense to me.

Your story is not bad. It is thought up good and there are many good things about it. But I can't help but think it could be so, so much better if you put these things into consideration.
Then again, people are always learning and I think this one must have been quite an experience for you. It's definitely better than most fanfics here.

And once more... that's just my opinion so I hope I don't offend you.

Thanks for the great read. :)
