This was really cute! I really love it!

VERY interesting take on the series. It isn't often that I see authors throwing the characters and/or plot back in the past and I'm just used to them staying in either the present or near future; however, I definitely enjoyed how you took them and put them in (what I assume to be) the Edo period of Japan, or at least somewhere around that medieval era.

I really liked Renzou as a monk and the background you had for the history between his own village and the one he visits. Lol, that seems like the perfect job for him. XD However, I think Rin was my personal favorite just because of how timid and shy you made him and how he secretly leaves gifts for the village children, whereas in the canon he's basically the exact opposite. Pretty much every time he came up in the fic and interacted with Renzou in some way or another, I just thought to myself, "Oh God, ADORABLE." I'm sorry, I just can't help myself. XD

The plot, dialogue, and settings were all very good and everyone was basically kept in character ("everyone" being Rin and Renzou, I suppose) so I was thoroughly happy with the way this turned out. However, I do have a few criticisms:

1.) I felt like you could have expanded upon Rin's background just a bit more. I believe you mentioned that he was a war prisoner and that when the villagers found him he was crying over the body of (who I believe to be) his father, but not much more than that. I guess I was just wondering about his upbringing, where he lived, his relationship with his father, brother and/or mother, and just maybe a couple general things about his life before meeting Renzou.

2.) I'll admit this one is more just nitpicking from my end, but... I don't know, when it comes to rape in stories I guess I can be a bit of a prude. I'm glad you portrayed it as a negative thing and how traumatizing it can be rather than some sort of sexual fetish or whatever like I've seen a lot of lately around here, which I'm VERY grateful for, but just the idea of Rin being raped at least once every day for God-knows-how-many-years since he first arrived at the village made me slightly sick to my stomach. I like some darker stuff here and there and probably would have been fine with like plain old torture, but THAT... I suppose it was just a bit much for me.

3.) While I'll admit I'm a complete sucker for happy endings, I still enjoyed this one but I felt like it was cut a bit short. For some reason, I guess I was half-expecting to see Renzou take Rin back to Assiah with him and live together or something, but I found it a bit disappointing when it ended just as they were leaving the village. I was also anticipating a possible lemon between them, but... ah, whatever. More nitpicking...

Other than that, though, really, this was a very unique and enjoyable read! Great job, and keep up the great work! ;)

Oh my god I loved the ending! This was a great story and I really enjoyed reading it. Plus this was my first Rin x Shima fanfiction to read and it was a great intro to the pairing!
