Reviews for Held By Doom
AleezaChocolat chapter 4 . 1/7/2005
Hullo!

I just had to comment on this fic. I searching for any fanfics of Túrin Turambar (as his tale enchants me), and came across this brilliant piece, and read. It is truly wonderful! It is very well written and the characters are very canon! Kudos to you! This is going on my Favorites. I'm gonna keep checking for more each day! _~
RavenLady chapter 4 . 2/3/2004
Turin's desperation to keep Lalaith safe is very touching. I must thank you for the beautiful and vivid portrayal of Morwen; she's one of my favorite characters, and almost no one writes about her. I especially liked this part:
"Alone and proud stands my mother, her chin lifted without fear though around her all grows dark and wild, a single erect white figure amid the ruin."
Nellas' chapter is simply beautiful, and she has some intriguing ideas, that's for sure. Melian is downright fascinating, for reasons that Finch mentioned, fate vs. free will.
You do intend write Finduilas and Nienor, don't you? I see this hasn't been updated lately, but I do hope you'll continue.
Mercurie chapter 4 . 3/7/2003
OK, third review. great character development compared to the first chapter. Túrin's really growing up, though unfortunately not growing out of his flaws (but we like him that way!). Melian is a lot like Galadriel. very cool. I love the description of Thingol as well. Lalaith is still my favorite chapter so far - she reminds me of my brother. Poor Túrin, just a flawed and cursed Man among so much glory. You really capture his style. Can't wait for more.
Mercurie chapter 2 . 3/7/2003
I was wrong when I said this would be really good. It's really, really, amazingly, unbelievably excellent. The characterization is unmatched (I'm going to try and write Túrin like this in my next fic!). And the metaphor about the roots ripping away was really cool too . . . I am awe-struck, keep writing like this!
Mercurie chapter 1 . 3/4/2003
I don't have time to read this right now, curses! But I'm adding it to my favorites list and I promise I will read it ASAP. Looks really, really great!
Furius chapter 3 . 10/6/2002
There we go, torturing characters again, *cries*, but at least this is happier than the other parts of Turin's life. Gotta give you credit for that. Good for Nellas, but if she only knew. Poor Turin, poor Nellas.
Belthronding chapter 1 . 9/19/2002
Sad. Beautifully portrayed though. I've often wondered about Lalaith, after all nothing is ever said of her apart from that she was Turin's sister and she died, well I mean she never spoke, I like it when people do fics about minor (as in little or no speaking part) characters. This isn' making much sense, I think you've really got a gift for writing :)
Isildae chapter 4 . 9/1/2002
Wow. I can't believe that you and I both have the same vision of Melian. It's almost staggering to me. I remember when I first read The Silmarrillion and first found the wisdom and greatness that is the Maia. I kept thinking over and over how badly I would love to serve such as these, to be in their midst, and learn from their wisdom.

The Maia always seemed more personable to me than the Valar, more humble, and more understanding (That is where their power lies) For they are themselves servants. Melian I find to be the greatest of her kind. Its a pity Turin could not escape his doom, and heed the truth of her words.

Keep writing PLEASE! Your talent is unmatched!
Finch chapter 4 . 8/31/2002
This chapter made me wonder how much Melian knew of Morgoth's curse on Hurin and his family. As a mortal, Turin may not be bound by fate, but (also according to the title of this story) he is held by doom. What is the difference? Can he really change what he becomes? How powerful is Morgoth's curse? In a way, this is the most fascinating story of the Silmarillion, and you do bring up the basic question here: determination vs. free will.
Maeve Riannon chapter 4 . 8/31/2002
"Speak not of doom". Melian didnt sem very wise there, did she? Im very happy with your story...it is daring and beautiful, and tells us about the one who should have get more fics of the whole Silmarillion. After all, he was Tolkiens favorite!

Stunned about that of Turin giving his heart to his sister Urwen since he was a child. Perhaps he loved Niénor because she reminded him of her?
Staggering Wood-Elf chapter 4 . 8/31/2002
Aaah! You should plug on Silmfics, I almost missed this one under the relentless tide of Mary Sues...

More brilliance. Ack, am jealous. Where do you get all Melian's wisdom from? *suspects Mouse is Maia with internet link*... :)

And where did you find a personality test with Silm characters in? Show me show me show me!
Staggering Wood-Elf chapter 3 . 8/19/2002
What? I haven't reviewed yet? Bad, bad me. *Hits self with keyboard*. Lovely chapter, as always. Where did you learn to write like this? Not fair. Love this story, the characters are great. Perhaps you could do Melian next, she's a slightly smaller jump than Finduilas. Or maybe explore some obscure UT characters and do the girl he met in the forest being chased by the outlaws... Although I suppose he doesn't know her for very long. Ack, I'm rambling. Bad habit. Good fic. More please? *big eyes*
Finch chapter 3 . 8/12/2002
Finally you've updated! And changed the titel, which will make the story more accessible, I think.

Another great chapter. Nellas seems perfectly in keeping with Tolkien's portrayal of her in the Narn. (did she perchance remain in Middle-earth and end up whispering wisdom into Plato's ear?).

Turin seems definitely less troubled in her presence. A pity their tongues were locked. But then, there's Morgoth's Curse...
Maeve Riannon chapter 2 . 8/12/2002
Oh, Im so sorry! I was reviewing your last chapter when the window closed I dont know why, and it was sent unfinished.

I wished to say that Nellas no doubt influenced Turin very much. She doesnt appear very much in the story, but it is said she taught him many things...and now we know what kind of things. To know the meaning of selfish love, the only one she knew (wow!)

Continue this story, Turin deserves attention.
Maeve Riannon chapter 3 . 8/12/2002
Sorry, I have no time to type a long review, but I liked it so much! Im glad you didnt leave Nellas out. She influences
