reading the A/N I agree. Merlin gave way too much of his happiness and in the end he has nothing to show for it he's lost 2 people who arguably knows him completely another who finally gets to know him(Gwaine and Lance are the 2 people who know him completely and Arthur is the one who finally knows) . He gives up Morgana and has to kill her someone he clearly and I would argue loved and cared for. He loses Mordred someone who could've been like a son to him if not an apprentice or close friend. And heck magic and this supposed kingdom isn't even United and he's left to be a lonely old man.
