ArentYouSophiaLoren-8887 chapter 1 . 7/2/2012 So, this is REALLY insightful. What I loved the most about this story is how you made Jake unable to answer Clare when she asked him the entire point of the store: if he could choose his own happiness over Glen's, would he, given everything he has to lose if he does? It's the ultimate test for Jake - he can have everything he wants, but at the expense of the person he loves most in the world, his father, losing everything HE already has. And the moment this became a WOW story was that moment right there, when you made Jake say he didn't know. Because it feels so REAL. Jake's always put Glen's happiness over his own, and you pointed out some great reasons behind it: there's no one else to take care of him and be his family, he hated seeing his father so upset over the divorce, he loves his father. But the fact that he still wrestles with what he wants in this story is what makes it SUCH a great and genuine moment when he admits he doesn't know what he wants to do. It shows his personality - mature enough to be able to put other people above himself, but at the same time he wants the things his father is lacking in this alternate world. And the fact that he chooses his dad over himself in the end shows what he's made out of. I also REALLY love how you made the story have a somewhat bittersweet ending. Because even though Jake chooses to give Glen his happiness, when Jake wakes up he still feels regret that he's lost Clare. He still wants her, still wishes he could have had that chance with her. Sure, he knows it's a start to building a better sibling bond with Clare, but nothing was changed overnight (literally). He still has his regrets. There's a lot of great character work going on here, and a lot of insight to Jake as his own character even if it's a Cake story. One of the most interesting (not to mention IC) pieces about Jake that I've ever read. |
Anonomous chapter 1 . 6/5/2012 I loved this story. I really liked how you wrote it. I was kind of sad to see that they didn't get back together, but the way you wrote it was amazing! I like your spin on it. You should write more like this. Good job! :) |
