Modern-AU Katara's issues seem to spring from a situation similar to canon; she fell for Jet, and he used her to do something horribly wrong. But unlike in canon, there apparently was no Aang there to also be sucked in by Jet's charm, and reassure her without words that they were both Jet's victims too, so she shouldn't blame herself for whatever disaster happened and get sucked into a whirlpool of guilt. I semi-suspect that in this AU, Katara's heavy guilt trip led to a suicide attempt that thankfully failed or was thwarted, which is why Sokka and Suki are treating her like a beautiful but cracked vase that could shatter if they'e not really careful.

I can't tell what Modern-AU Zuko's issues are, though; we haven't heard enough from him yet.
