"I like you in my shirt," he says, voice private, laced with want as he cants his hips toward her, his body bowed over hers and she grabs her hands around his hips, runs her fingers up along his chest. His breath hitches underneath her touch. - Beautiful. The mood you've created.

"Kate, did I…?" There's shock in eyes, pain in his voice.

"No, no no no," she murmurs, oh god no, her fingers in his hair, down his cheek, urging him to look at her. "You didn't… you wouldn't." - Jesus Castle. You're not THAT good lol.

"Don't go," she whispers, incoherent, clenched, her nails digging into his skin, raw with sudden anxiety, "don't leave." - I love that in most stories it's him begging her to stay, to do this. I love that you have her begging him to stay. That she's so anxious about all of it.

"Kiss me," she whispers, finds his skin, his heartbeat, his lips. "Kiss me again." - LOVE.

The writing is spectacular: Evocative, expressive, precise without undue exaggeration.

Knowing the characters helps, but is not entirely necessary. It could be any man and any woman finding themselves suddenly, inexorably committed to each other.

It's only in the external references to scenes not shown, but only alluded to here that a casual, unfamiliar reader might find themselves puzzling over the details.

In a former universe, I used to refer to such efforts as "flash fics," but this is no mere flash. It is a shining, sustained light illuminating the inner core of two of our favorite characters. Bravo and well done!
