I remember reading this a few years back, and it always stuck with me with its simple elegance and poetry. What a pleasure to find it again. All three stories in this series are just wonderful. Spot on in characterization, melancholy and poignant, with such hope imbued in the tone of them. I can only imagine how much better your writing has gotten since. Thank you so much for sharing it!

I love this. There are strong hints in canon that Haymitch and Mrs. Everdeen (presumably, Katniss's father, too) had something subversive and rebellious in their past - the "Hanging Tree" song, for one, and then their response to Thread ("It's starting again, isn't it?"). I've always suspected that Collins's background-notes-bible must be a thousand pages long, and full of things that happened fifty years before Katniss was born, and this fic evokes that same sense of depth and continuity.

Haymitch is indeed perfectly Haymitchy, and I'm a sucker for *anything* in which Gale and Katniss reconcile as friends though not as lovers, which is the best of all possible endings for them, IMHO.

Wow. This was amazing.

Honestly, I wasn't a fan of the epilogue until I read this. The character you created with Rosie was wonderfully lovable and added so much to the story; And I liked how Katniss is actually in love with Peeta. You write tender moments so well, and mix them up with enough other stuff to balance them out. Favorite line? Haymitch: I saw you set the world on fire.
