I was honestly struck by the finer points of this story, especially unexpected details like the roots of Mahaad's hair showing and the tattoos around his eyes marking him as a mage. This was a nicely crafted introspective piece that addressed more with fewer words.

Their relationship seems so natural. Nothing Mahaad thinks is out of place, and I have to say, his low self-esteem quips are endearing.

For "unpolished", I thought this was very well done! I love introspective pieces like this, and this was a great glimpse into Mahad's character, complete with hints of backstory (the scars! the blond roots!) and a sardonic self-evaluation. I could probably go on for a while about the characterization, but I'd just end up summarizing your own story for you. Nevertheless, I loved the way you wrote him.

As for the rest of it, the technical aspect of the writing was good-it flowed without drawing attention to itself. Physical details were sparse, but that's fitting for this kind of story, the details you do include only add to the atmosphere. Additionally, it was a complete story, (always a bonus), that made the pairing completely believable to me. Very well done!
