Anon chapter 16 . 11/21/2013 This story is just perf! I can't even begin to describe how wonderful a writer you are! In the last line of ch. 5 where it said : "Sigyn put a hand to her pendant, tears forming in her eyes. Oh, she thought, oh, you silly girl." I was just like "SQUEEEEE!" Please continue to write this fanfic! |
nlkwhgjksfjqv chapter 1 . 11/19/2013 I actually read this a while ago and I believe there were some things which I saw which could be improved on. More reviews on other chapters soon. One thing which I found really jarring was that Sigyn never referred to herself as "Sigyn" for long stretches and then suddenly the narrative uses her name to describe her actions before going back into the use of 'she' and 'her' for a long while before it happens again. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but my advice would be to either pick a style: either she is named or she isn't. I can understand the lack of a name could mean we don't really have a picture of her and it allows us more of a blank canvas to paint the picture of her, but I found it slightly annoying if anything. Now for more Sigyn. This is something I found myself thinking throughout the story, and that is Sigyn is a very self-centred person. She thinks about herself a lot, whether it had been on her emotions and inner thoughts, and especially at her treatment at the hands of the other jotnar. We're told over and over again that Sigyn is disliked in Laufey's court, but we don't need this fact repeated over and over. The reflections and the retelling of information clogs the story up and I found myself skim reading huge chunks of text which were just Sigyn's thoughts and feelings. ONTO THE CHAPTER. There was an instance right at the beginning when you mention Thor (well, I'm guessing it's Thor because of the 'red cape' bit) and then Loki all of a sudden just seems very ... stuck in at the last minute? He isn't directly mentioned for a while until Sigyn catches him looking at her and I have to re-image the whole scene in my head again. For me, you should either have Sigyn say that there was another prince there she didn't see when he steps out from behind Thor and/or Odin suddenly, or tell the audience that there were three of them there. Or even yet, take Thor out of the picture all together. Now after the Bifrost bit. One thing I notice you've done consistently throughout the story is to have everyone fall silent when they see the jotnar in front of them. Personally, I don't think completely silence would fall, but there would be a lot of whispering/muttering, and most definitely cries of shock, yelling at them, etc. To have an entire crowd of hundreds, probably even thousands ceasing talking all at once seems a bit silly. I get they're hostile towards the jotnar, but it's not the reaction of a real life crowd. Also on the crowd, you mention how when the Generals have been given over to Laufey their wives cry out in shock. I'd cut that out if I were you. It seems squashed in there and a little bit ridiculous. I get that it sucks for them, but ... ehhhh, it doesn't really sit right with me. And one more paragraph and I promise I will shut up. Sigyn's description of things slightly annoyed me somewhat, because it portrays her, in my mind, as a bit clueless and possibly even stupid. Saying stuff like "... a long thing with a mirror atop it stood next to a ridiculously large sleeping mat ..." throws the reader off. Putting in words like "... blah blah blah thing ..." takes people out of the story and puts them back into reality because of the very colloquial use of the word 'thing'. Either tell the reader what things are (because I'm sure Sigyn would know what the object is, or even have a guess at what it was (because I think the jotnar are far from uncivilised) or use words which are more appropriate to the setting, such as using the word "object" in the place of "thing". Sorry if it's a bit rambley, but I hope it helps! |
Fern23 chapter 16 . 11/11/2013 Cliffhanger! I love where this is going, such a unique story. Update soon, please! :) |
