Wow, that was an epic one shot! I love the premise and how you wove these characters we know and love into your story. You captured all the characters voices so well, bravo!

I normally find scenes where Castle and Beckett are singing awfully cheesy and embarrassing but this one was actually really good ! The scene with Lanie was great too (but painful to read). I so want a following to these two stories :)

Just a few thoughts on your lovely story that I only recently discovered:

This line so perfectly described a woman in New York on her way to a party! It's a bit of realism that most people take for granted (living on the West Coast there are few indoor/outdoor temp changes like in NY), but as Castle would say, it's in the details!"

She's glad to find that it's the perfect temperature inside the car. That's always a gamble in New York City in the winter – you bundle up to fight the biting cold and then get inside a subway car or a small store or restaurant and find yourself wet and on fire because of overcompensation brought to you by the thermostat."

So then in your story we go from a simple telling of Kate as she struggles with her alone-ness, secrets and walls, to a delightful description of that feeling you get late at night after a few too many staring at yourself in a bathroom mirror:

"Detective Beckett," she mumbles to herself, narrowing her eyes, "you need to quit fucking around."

And of course, the meeting between Lanie and Beckett is one of the best I have read in a long long while. It felt so much like the (SPOILER) discussion between them in Probable Cause, and yet you wrote this before that episode existed. Yet there's this frankness that runs between these friends that negates verbosity.

So then of course, I just had to play that beautiful Fleetwood Mac song a few times while I finished your lovely story! The way you described Kate''s Head Canon was so perfect - I feel you really captured her. (Castle maybe less so - but this wasn't really about him, was it?)
