Reviews for Geoffrey Hunter and the Secret Society
unlikely2 chapter 30 . 11/23/2018
Oh dear.
Congratulations on a particularly machiavellian and likable OC.
unlikely2 chapter 28 . 11/22/2018
They are not students. They are lemmings.
RHJunior chapter 17 . 12/29/2017
if they use actual gold or silver- which, seeing as precious metals are part of Gamp's Exemption and cannot be created by magic short of a Philosopher's Stone, would be the only SANE thing Goblins could use as money- then "forgery" is a meaningless concept. You only need simple patterns on precious metals because precious metals can't be faked. And you certainly wouldn't need to make the coins magical, because that would defeat the purpose of using commodities that cannot be magically faked.

Ugh, I could spend pages on the nature of money and currency and economics and how LITTLE anyone seems to understand them beyond "dis piece of paper buy me cheeseburger. Paper good!"

Rowling's own sloppy work makes me want to scream. If you think her scoring system and game design for Quidditch are awful, imagine having any sort of education in economics and looking at her monetary system. Solid gold coins only worth five pounds? Arbitrary fixed ratios between commodities? The smallest denomination made of an ALLOY- which in turn is made from two of the CHEAPEST metals on Earth? It'd be enough to make an economist fling themselves in front of the Hogwarts Express.
olvassok chapter 1 . 4/15/2016
I am sorry that you appear to have given up on this story. I consider it one of the best adult centric stories on the site.
neither here nor ethere chapter 22 . 11/4/2015
This was beautifully frightening while still retaining Geoffrey's dry wit.
neither here nor ethere chapter 9 . 11/3/2015
"Jenny Everywhere, Slytherin."
I read this in public. I guffawed in public.
I humbly request an expanded Scorpius Sorting story if one is not already on your profile.
Bonehammer chapter 30 . 1/2/2014
This story had me hooked after a slow start. Lots of things happening, IC canon characters, an intriguing plot... one couldn't really ask for more, except maybe the completed story?
Great work!
Redentor chapter 5 . 7/11/2013
I really have no idea why your story hasn't obtained more reviews, favourites and follows. This is one of the better stories I've seen so far in this section.
Snape5 chapter 3 . 7/8/2013
Oh, oh oh, it's so good.
The plot is building gradually, the characters are interesting and I like the candle thing - I was waiting to see what would happen with that.
But the thing I'm really loving here is the money calculations and the thoughts on wizarding culture.

Where I live (Wales) there is a fierce determination to hold onto the culture - which includes a certain amount of recreation/invention.
It struck me very early on in HP that wizards are clearly doing this as well. I loved your thoughts on the mish-mash of styles in Diagon Alley - and the idea that they were dressing up to go there.
I have been (because I'm sad like that) totting up quoted costs to see how they add up with your exchange rate, and I quite like it. I think, in my head I just lazily put a 0 on the end of each galleon amount which made everything slightly expensive.
700g/£2,800- prize money to take all the Weasley's to Egypt and buy Ron a new wand (very good value)
"hundreds of galleons" - Firebolt (I can see this)
GoF prize 1000g/£5000 - to set up WWW (plausible)
10,000g/£50,000 - Ministry reward for catching Sirius.

Don't know if I said in my last review but I like how you've made Neville seem IC but older, Hannah is how I imagined her and the description of Bill is funny.
Looking forward to seeing how Geoff gets on with the teaching.
Snape5 chapter 2 . 7/6/2013
I can't wait to see how Geoffrey gets on with the students. The mind boggles.
Headmistress was funny as well. I love the contrast, in the adult thoughts and even words in Geoff's internal monologue, to Harry's first thoughts on Hogwarts.
Grey Lady's accent was hard to understand without reading it aloud - that always gets some funny looks.
Deeply funny. He sounds very Canadian? - but to me American, I am ashamed to say.

The history of the separation of Muggles and Wizards was interesting. Clearly a lot of Wizard things see, frozen in the past, as if there was a sudden mixing with Muggle tech in the 18th and 19th century. I;m assuming and hope that you go into more details about wizards views on muggles, because I thought this was very well thought out.
Snape5 chapter 1 . 7/5/2013
Things a real human being might think on arriving in Hogsmeade.

Are you Geoff? Because you've made him sound astonishingly real.

The writing style is lovely, and it's funny, so much so I was surprised you didn't include humour in your genres - but that is just my thought after the first chapter.
What else? I liked Neville, he seemed very in character while also seeming older. And the thoughts on Hagrid. It was REALLY funny.
"Then he demonstrated Stupefy on a customer who'd kindly volunteered for the role by groping the waitress."
The whole chapter has a very strong feeling of being a 'new' story - and although I've seen the idea of a muggle at Hogwarts before, written it even, I think the strength of your OC is what's making this so exciting. There was a bit of a male only feel to this chapter, despite the waiting on staff. I'm looking forward to seeing Grimward and the rest of the Wizarding World though such a very different pair of eyes to Harry's.
HighTreason25 chapter 30 . 6/12/2013
The formatting in this chapter seems to have taken a bit of a dive. Great work, otherwise!
Lieutenant Paladine chapter 8 . 4/15/2013
The hell? That's it?
BJArthur chapter 30 . 4/13/2013
this story has the fascinating effect of not only being very compelling, but also making me think about the historical contexts of the BWW. the part about the Jacobites blew me away - i had to take a second to wrap my brain around it and it was wonderful. i'm also really enjoying Geoffrey - he is written completely. i can see all of his bits and odds and ends in a sentence - whether one he says or one he thinks. he is different and distinct - and a slightly snarky academic, which i love.

thank you for writing this, and i hope to see more!

- BJ
RandomCitizen chapter 2 . 11/12/2012
I learned from Pottermore that there was the term Magbob, back when wizards thought muggle-borns and the like more as "talented" or "exceptional" or something like that. :D
I like this term better, it sounds cute. Muggle always felt crude to me like mugging someone or a dog, "puggle".
