Reviews for The Middle Man
Triscribe chapter 1 . 7/22/2016
Ooh... Very interesting concept.
The Great Wizard Qui Quae Quod chapter 1 . 7/23/2014
Curiously enough, this was not unusual during WWII. The German intelligence network was absolutely riddled with double agents. In fact, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris leader of the intelligence network, Abwehr, was part of a group of officers that opposed Hitler and his Nazi party. He did everything and anything that he could to bring down the Nazis from the in side. This included smuggling Jewish people out of Germany and giving information to the allies.
England was especially good at locating and turning Germany's moles. By the end on WWII, every agent that Germany sent to England had become a double agent, giving the British intelligence absolute control over the German intelligence agency in England.
Beloved Daughter chapter 1 . 3/1/2014
Oh wow. Surprise ending - absolutely brilliant! Great insight into the mentality of why a German would be part of the Underground. Thanks for writing and posting!
Binca chapter 1 . 12/6/2012
What a great story! Very well written, and I love the way you kept Hans' identity a secret until the end. I had my suspicions from the start that it was a German, but I wasn't 100% sure. Glad it was Hochstetter though, I love seeing him placed in a better light sometimes.

I also love the way you showed different view points for people fighting on the same side. Great job! :)
Guest chapter 1 . 8/28/2012
Well, um, that's a different view of Hochstetter...

and an interesting read. Not sure I can make it fit into my headspace, but this was definitely well-written.
snooky-9093 chapter 1 . 3/3/2012
Had to reread this. Congrats on the nomination! This story is definitely screaming for a sequel.
Jennaya chapter 1 . 2/27/2012
A well done story, I enjoyed the depth of the driver, his thoughts and reasoning for him putting his life on the line. I thought it was Hogan until I got about half way through the story, then I realized who it was. Bravo!
snooky chapter 1 . 1/13/2012
Bravo! I can't say anything more than the last reviewer. I had no idea who the middle man was until the end. Another well-thought out and well-written entry. Great job.
Goldleaf83 chapter 1 . 1/5/2012
The beginning of the story is a real hook: because you keep Hans’s identity under wraps until the end, it’s easy to try to fit him onto one of the Heroes. But little clues dropped deftly in as the story develops tell us it can’t be one of them (“sturdy, thickset Wachmann,” for instance, clearly doesn’t fit Hogan or any of his men, plus there’s Wachmann’s ease in “posing” as Gestapo). The revelation at the end is just perfect: still a surprise, but built up to so well that the reader can see looking back just how well the story has prepared for it. This is a terrific take on Hochstetter, because it gives him some background (not too much, just enough to explain why he’s doing what he’s doing) but preserves the antagonism with Hogan to some degree. Now, though, it’s based on their different philosophies and approaches to the same goal – but perhaps still irreconcilable. Hogan’s focused on the big picture, Hochstetter on the small; both are right and both are wrong, caught up in the moral impossibilities posed by the war. Great use of the helping couple from “The Flame Grows Higher”: I’ve thought before they pose interesting story possibilities. You’ve set this up as a one-shot, but the tensions you’ve created in it would work well as a platform to develop a longer story.
Six of Twelve chapter 1 . 12/3/2011
Ha! What a cool twist at the end. Nice to see that Hochstetter is really on the right side.
Firefall chapter 1 . 12/2/2011
Hmmmm...secrets and secrets...curiouser and curiouser...

Hans' weary personal determination to help the individuals he can, becoming Hochstetter's frenetic drive to stop Hogan. Wow. Great job.
jodm chapter 1 . 12/2/2011
Very powerful! I would never have expected Hochstetter to be part of an underground movement, trying in his own way to save those he could. I'l love to know more about what brought him to this point in his life.
konarciq chapter 1 . 12/2/2011
An intriguing look into a side of the escape business we don't usually get to see.

And an intriguing twist on a well known character. I confess I started suspecting it was him about halfway through the story - and it was great to see his thoughts behind his actions in the end!

Well done!
Glossina chapter 1 . 12/1/2011
Wow. That was not the ending I was expecting.

I liked it. I'd like to see more of this.
buggleston chapter 1 . 12/1/2011
Intriguing one- shot .I enjoyed the hints of who the Watchman is throughout the story but I still found the ending to be a surprise to be done!
