What have you done to the races of middle earth?

I'm liking this so far. While having Saruman and his Uruks using guns is new, you give an interesting take on that. At the same time, you avert the biggest sin of it by showing that just because he has the advantage with quality, against a vastly numerically overwhelming foe, it is less useful than people think.

At the same time, the fact that the bad guys are getting firearms of a sort is troubling to everyone. There is a reason why they became the primary ranged weapon, and it wasn't because they were any more superior to the bow with regards to ranged accuracy. In fact, it was the opposite for centuries. It was the ease of training massive numbers of soldiers to use guns quickly, along with the psychological effect of being shot at. Big Boom and bad stuff heading your way equals brown pants the first few times, even when the guys doing the firing are intentionally aiming to miss.

This is a darn fine story that you are sharing.
I like how you are moving the story along and it is like 'oh and the Fellowship of the Ring is doing this.' Because even if this is about destroying the One Ring, it is not the Fellowship that is driving the most change.
I do hope that Frodo gets some more screen time and that he does not try to lone wolf it to Mount Doom(heh heh).

Speaking of taking on Mordor...He will need to vastly improve his artillery to get through the black gate. That things seems to be in the movies at least a massive multi-foot thick monstrosity made of steel. And its probably enchanted given how important that thing's location is.

The city walls are held canonically to be effectively indestructible, with only the gates being in any vulnerable to any weapon the army of morder possessed.

I can't find good information if the battering ram Grond was simple a tree trunk encased in steel or was ENTIRELY black steel: different sources go with different interpretation here.

But if it were the latter...grond would have weighed anything from 10,000-15,000 tons based on how it is in the movies...yeah, Minas Tirith being trouble for artillery that Saruman could make is right.

As in, its going to be a while before any artillery piece Sarumen makes could threaten a numenorean fortification on the grade.

Some of Tolkein's old notes actually imply the Numenoreans had access to steam power in addition to their magical capabilities, and describing them of having "siege engines making sounds of thunder" with ranges in multiple leagues.

All in all, I liked this chapter. Don't have much else to say about it. I am glad you tried to portray as not a total pushover. Those horses even in book canon are far beyond what should be biologically possible, while in the films, you can clearly see orcs in full steel armor bouncing off the things without the horses even noticing, much less slowing down. The strength of the Rohirrim truly are their totally absurd horses.

to answer you question about Enedwaith:

Enedwaith was said not to belong to either Arnor or Gondor, sharing an interest in that region. The hold was nominal as it wasn't settled by them, due to the hostility of the Gwathuirim. The only settlement was a fortified town and haven at Tharbad, a garrison populated by soldiers, mariners and engineers.[1][4]
Following the Great Plague in T.A. 1636 the region fell quickly into decay; and back into wild fenlands[5] however, Gondor's authority permanently lapsed throughout the region. At some point the Isen marked the western bounds of Gondor but it was of little concern other than the patrolling and upkeep of the great Royal Road.[6]
Tharbad, originally one of two ancient cities on the Gwathló, and the only one to survive beyond the early Third Age, was finally abandoned following devastating floods in T.A. 2912, and thereafter, only two groups survived in Enedwaith: the Dunlendings in the far east, and a "fairly numerous but barbarous fisher-folk" wandering the coast.

So yeah, it IS populated...just not by any sort of real civilization And yeah, the its true the Horse Lords have a chequered history. I'd say they are not as bad in the present as in the past, but that is relative I suppose.

All, in all, decent chapter. and combines to fictional universes I love.

I do think this chapter while good, is a little unflattering to Gandalf, who is literally the wisest of all Maiar. If he were more in character Gandalf would see that Sarumen clearly still had good intentions, and would probably pick up on him not having regressed as far as he had in canon. That is sort of person Gandalf is.
