She chased after him and didn't think he really loved her. She also went to America. When she came back they met again. They also got married like this. He didn't really propose or anything romantic. Just brought her to register their marriage. She was also interested in photography and saw him standing under a tree and took his picture. It's called Silent Separation by Gu Man. It's a Chinese novel translated over at hui3 Wordpress
