Reviews for The Beginning Foundations
mrspencil chapter 1 . 1/18
You have a deft touch with character which does not stray too far into sentimentality, but makes it very clear why and how strong bonds are formed. Very well done:-)
Deana chapter 1 . 1/26/2019
Excellent story!
Abracadebra chapter 1 . 1/2/2017
This was one of the very first stories I read on FF, and it has stayed with me ever since! It's a thoughtful exploration of how the Newkirk/LeBeau friendship came to be. It's utterly unsentimental, and I love that about it. LeBeau's first encounters with the grouchy, complaining loner who becomes his best friend aren't encouraging, but then he shows him some kindness and a transformation occurs. The fact that the story revolves around food is perfect, because feeding others is LeBeau's ultimate expression of caring.

Avirra is one of nine writers I've marked as a favorite, and I wanted to make sure I'd reviewed the first HH story written by each one. Her HH work definitely deserves a wider audience!

One very minor suggestion I prefer it when authors DON'T write in dialect - I already read Newkirk dialogue with dropped H's and so on. I often find the dialect distracting. Having said that, Avirra does it better than just about anyone else. She gets the tone just right!
RealLifeJoanWilder chapter 1 . 3/18/2015
I like it when people can successfully write a sitcom as a drama. I throughly enjoyed this prequel to the series. Also, very nice job with Newkirk's accent.
Janet12 chapter 1 . 1/29/2015
Nice story!
SaraiEsq chapter 1 . 6/2/2013
Nice!
Glossina chapter 1 . 6/20/2012
Lovely. Just lovely. I really, really liked this and would like to see it expanded on.
spookysister7 chapter 1 . 2/16/2012
great story
snooky-9093 chapter 1 . 1/14/2012
Catching up on reading now that it is PBA time! I love Newkirk/LeBeau friendship stories and this was no exception. It had a nice pace to it. I loved how you wrote Newkirk's accent, and yes, an upper-class, bigoted officer would have no use for a poor Cockney. I come from Cockney stock myself, so I have a soft spot for Newkirk.
SupernaturalFlames chapter 1 . 12/23/2011
Very nice story! :) You portrayed everyone perfectly! Great job!
Goldleaf83 chapter 1 . 10/22/2011
A nice story on how our unlikely pair started their friendship. LeBeau learns to look beyond his initial prejudices as he revises his first impression of the Englishman in the light of what he sees for himself. Compassion is clearly the foundational emotion in their friendship, which we then also see in Kinch near the end of the story – much needed in this earlier version of Stalag 13. Good characterization of all three of our Heroes: I especially like your version of Newkirk, with his tough attitude hiding his big heart. I read the sequel to this story, “Newkirk vs. Fetherston,” before reading this one, and this does serve as a nice introduction to it, though the second story works very well on its own.
Dinky Dau chapter 1 . 10/14/2011
OMg I absolutely adore Newkirk :3

and fics about how all the Heroes met so this one is right up in my ally! I loved it, especially how the unlikely friendship between Newkirk, LeBeau and Kinch starts :D

I'll be reading Fetherston versus Newkirk very soon!
El Gringo Loco chapter 1 . 10/8/2011
A short but well written story that provides background material, both for certain of the heroes. And for the author's just completed story Featherton vs Newkirk which I read first. While not essential to understnading that story, it definitely helps. And I find myself regretting that I did not find this one first.
Canadian Hogan's Fan chapter 1 . 10/3/2011
Very sweet story. I think Sgt. Moffitt covered my feelings off nicely, but I'll add that I liked how you took LeBeau's POV on this one. You really conveyed all his emotions, from anger at Newkirk, then Fetherston, to concern and care for Newkirk, who was clearly in physical distress. Wonderful job.
buggleston chapter 1 . 10/1/2011
I liked the way you built on the bond of Friendship that Newkirk and Lebeau had in the beginng and how that friendship was expaned with well written story .
