Love your take on this. Personally, with Kurt's vocal range and a few name and pronoun adjustments, I think he'd make an extraordinary Maria. They could change the name to Mario and pronounce it "mare-ee-oh" like the Dancing With the Stars announcer did for Mario Castranovez (sp?).

I was beyond angry when Coach Beiste of all people was saying she liked the idea of a black Maria as though that was thinking outside the box. She ought to have a better grasp than anyone on how painful it is to try to make your way into a heteronormative profession when your SEX (which is determined by genitalia: male, female, or ambigious/intersexed) does not match your GENDER, wherever it may be on the spectrum of masculine to feminine.)

My apologies for bringing out my somewhat rusty Gender Studies rant, but I love my sister, a lesbian, too much to miss out on an opportunity educate anyone who might happen to read my review. I can't possibly tell you how much it means to me to read your story and know that there's one more enlightened, opened-minded, and talented writer out there. I like that you changed Juliet to my love. I was wondering what you were going to do with that in the rewrite. Good job Blaine for calling them out! I like how you made them ask why he auditioned again with Romeo and Juliet so they would show their ignorance even more. Anyone who would laugh at Kurt's audition and be so close minded especially Bieste knows what it's like to be ridiculed and Artie who is supposed to be Kurt's friend is ignorant. And I think love is the perfect nickname for Kurt. I honestly think this is your best fanfic yet. This scene was so unsatisfying on the show. It begs to be rewritten and I am glad you did. *hug*

Exactly what I was thinking, the male actors playing female parts in Shakespearean time. I was stereotypical in thinking about Kurt playing Mariah/Juliet and Blaine Tony/Romeo but your version is much better. More powerful in expressing how ridiculous the directors were bypassing people. Because they could have been coaching Kurt into the Tony they wanted. Tony isn't particularly super macho. He's just a guy. So... I loved your story. Really loved it.
