abracadaver chapter 3 . 2/8/2014
So, I wanted to read all three chapters before writing a review. I've read all of alydia rackham's Lokane universe up to the recent frozen heart story. I love her work and yours as well, though I wanted to say that yours is decidingly different.
Where her's is enveloped with the fantasy and magic of Tolkien, that often graces her work your story alights the more classical approach (in my opinion).
I am currently taking a literature course of fairytales, and your story read like a classic of Grimm or Perrault. Especially the imagery you create by introducing the danger and uncertainty of the Asgardian forest. Without ever entering it we know it is a place of danger, and in fairytales (a lot of the classics) creeping monsters or creatures of mischeivous nature live in or right against the forest. And just the way you wrote how jane was enchanted by his presence, it was beautiful.
I'm actually currently writing a lesson up for the class and it involves the focus of forests in fairytales and how the forest can change are preconceived notions of the things that live in them. There is a tale (retold) based on the Russian story 'the snow maiden' called ardour by jonathon Keats it's a short 3 page tale. But it tells of a mythical maiden living in the forest who lives on the fringes of her memory's concept of humanity. So she waits for a man to come to her to warm her heart, all have skills of singing or good looks and a beautiful voice but none love her. So she plunges the land into an unending winter. One day a boy comes to her and instead of trying to seduce her or make her his, he shows kindness. And it breaks the never ending winter of the land (winter that never returns) as she has found her soulmate.
What I'm getting at is this story of Jane an loki was beautifully done and reminded me of a fairytale. It reminded me of that story and how perhaps the forest is just the temporary home for those who have been bereft of love and kindness, searching for the warmth of understanding and acceptance.
So that was a super over analysis of your story, sorry if it came off pretentious! I just really loved this story and wanted you to know it made me think of many things while reading it.
Can't wait for your epilogue (:
