Before I go further into this because it is good, there is a form of coma where the person is fully aware of their surroundings but in a deep sleep. It's basically like sleep paralysis, the brain is awake and alert but the body is asleep. It's horrifying for that person because they can't see anything but their other senses are active. In this state, there's even less chance they will awaken. They can feel touch and pain, hear noises, taste, and smell but they cannot move.

Secondly, he wouldn't starve or dehydrate. IVs with saline and feeding tubes prevent that when the body is comatose or in a similar state. The biggest concern would be muscle atrophy which can be treated with physical therapy during their coma and after should they wake up.

Danny does have a benefit of technically already being half-dead with his amazing healing powers. He probably would wake up.

So I have no idea why, but I always imagined Stewart and Ryan as these classic anime-styled doctors, complete with long lab coat and a clip board at all times. But when you mentioned them in a polo shirt, I thought of them as looking like forty year old men with a bald spot and a beer belly... and then I just died right there and then xD
