trufflemores chapter 2 . 10/10/2012
I loved the interaction between Blaine and Kurt here. It's casual, but there's also an undercurrent of interest in both parties. Blaine has already shown that he's intrigued by Kurt, and now Kurt's reaching out, albeit indirectly, to learn more about Blaine. The commonality - smoking - bringing them together was clever, and I liked how in the end Blaine even admitted that it was a nasty habit that he didn't really care for except it had become a habit and he didn't really care to stop, either. The way that Kurt brushes off the fact that he smuggled them in was clearly a bit of a wake-up call for him, since he's used to being acknowledged at private schools for it, and I'm glad that Kurt was able to have a conversation with him, even if it still leaves the same questions hanging. Kurt's still an enigma and Blaine's still frustrated by it, but it's definitely sparked his curiosity and he isn't going to stop there.

I loved how Jeff and Nick came to him after the conversation to warn him about how the fact that he had cigarettes would attract unwanted attention around Dalton. Nick's warning about the garden was funny, too, since Blaine is so opposed to all of it. The food, too; I'm not surprised that he caved at breakfast but still put on a bit of a hunger strike at lunch. With the meager rations, it's good that he took dinner and breakfast the next morning, since working in the gardens must not have been terribly fun. Jeff's enthusiasm for it was adorable, and I loved how he unwittingly grated on Blaine's nerves by whistling even though he's just happy to be outdoors and working.

And I adore how you worked Lucy into this. Her presence really does brighten Kurt's character immensely. It's clear that she is a confidante for him, and I'm happy to read that he has someone like that for him. He needs it, whether or not he wants to admit it, so it's reassuring to see that he has it. Blaine being fascinated by the changes was sweet, too. He was definitely hooked on Kurt even before Jeff dropped the revelation that he was gay on him. The wheels in Blaine's mind are already turning, and I love how you've started that.

Marvelously done. Interesting time period, too; not many people venture this far back, but I love the way that you've handled this piece.
trufflemores chapter 1 . 10/10/2012
An intriguing start to what looks like a promising AU already. I love how it begins with Blaine somewhat fascinated, somewhat horrified by the screaming match between Karofsky and Kurt. I'm not surprised that Kurt would be a bit of a hellion in any sort of reform situation. He's so independent and self-reliant that it seems unlike any sort of program would have a real effect on him, other than to make him more isolated and perhaps more aggressive, as he obviously is here. It's different to read about the Kurt that we're so used to just taking the abuse or, on one memorable occasion, chasing down his bully only to be forcibly kissed actually fighting back here. He must have held his own pretty well, too, if Karofsky had a bloody nose. Reading it all from Blaine's perspective gave it a new flare, since we don't know the full extent of Kurt's violent behavior. He's definitely a wildcat, and it makes for an interesting character.

Blaine was actually rather heartbreaking in this, because the only reason he acted out was to try to get other peoples' attention (which obviously failed, except for landing him in a reform school). It seems a lot like something that Blaine would have done canonically if it hadn't been for other, unknown influences on his life that did pay attention to him and kept him from turning to bad behavior. The fact that he is, at his core, still Blaine Anderson is impressive. You've managed to retain his character - like Kurt's - while still altering the course of his future enough that he would have a personality change. Both of them are more aggressive than their non-reform counterparts, and so their reactions vary but still, fundamentally, parallel how their canonical alter-egos would react.

Very nicely done. And I love how affronted Blaine is by everything, to the point of not even eating at dinner because he doesn't like the taste. I'm sure that he will learn, as Nick said, that you either take what you can get or you starve, and he probably won't pass up the next meal so easily (if at all). Besides, Blaine's a small guy, and he can't exactly afford to drop ten pounds on a hunger strike at a reform school. I like that the 'Warblers' took him under their wing, even though he was reluctant to join them at first. It again reinforces his frustration with trying to get peoples' attention and never receiving it, and his wariness around people is therefore understandable, especially at a place like Dalton.

The last scene was the most fascinating for me, because it definitely shows that there's more to Kurt Hummel than meets the eye. I loved your description of him when he entered the cafeteria - that, with a little polishing up, he could easily waltz into any high class party and fit in - and the description of him at the end was almost ethereal. It definitely makes me curious about his character and what he's really thinking underneath the hostility, and I love how you've conveyed all of that here.

An excellent start. Can't wait to read the next.

Shadowed Ember chapter 2 . 1/23/2012
So I've just started reading this story, and it's really quite charming. And I'm usually one of those people who don't review much, but I just had to tell you that, while I haven't read Freckles, I have read its... companion novel? (I'm not sure if that's really the best description) A Girl of the Limberlost, in which Freckles is mentioned. So, yeah. There you go. Anyway, I can see that you haven't updated this story in months, but it's a good one, so I'll be waiting to see if you post another chapter!
