Your plot is cute, too. Rose is adorable, and exactly like how I'd picture her in my head. It's rather disturbing that she found Bellatrix's name in a book, though... But back to the main point: your characters are somewhat in-character, but I find the Ron part a little odd- no offense, by the way.

Is it safe to say that you can judge the quality of someone's characterization by the awkwardness of their uncomfortable pauses?

I think so.

A lot of the time you miss their poignancy in writing because, just by their nature, they don't really take up a lot of space. Logistically, they're very easily breezed over and forgotten.

But yours are weird in that, for some reason, they work. That teacup falls for less than half a second and yet it just hangs there.

I think (at risk of compromising my aura of stoic masculinity) it has to do with just how sweet and utterly human your characters are, and so when they are uncomfortable, it's tangible. You have this incredible way of just making people want to hug people.

Wow, that was in some ways intense...I mean we know what horrendous things Bellatrix did to Hermione, so for her to allow her daughter to do that is truly courageous. Well written!
