That is very sad. I don't know this guy/gal or his work but it really is depressing. It makes me want to check if my other favorite artists are still with us. I never usually imagine that an artist is dead when I don't hear of their work for a few months or years. I mean I know everyone dies at one point and there is no stopping that. But i usually forgot that some people die early and it won't stop rubbing me the wrong way. I know I will probably forget this piece of news because I really have no connection to this author and I have yet to lose a friend. But I think we can all have a moment of silence for him/her and as I wrote this I realize I was completely silent for about 17 mins on accident. Well I am getting out of here. Sad topics can make me lose my marbles but not in a fun way.

I may not have made some of the same literary choices as Bushido, but it's always a tragedy when someone's taken before their time.

You have a lot of stories to cover you know that Chrome?

Here we conclude the first version of Showa x Vampire. There were a lot of battles, lots of heartache for the characters, lots of girls shacking up with a few guys.

* This particular chapter opened on kind of the conclusion of Hime and Gajeel’s confrontation from last chapter. Where he says he wants revenge on her for leaving him for dead. Weirdly, her immediate response to that is to say he better watch his ass because if he tries anything her best friend and boyfriend (Shinichi and Leon) will automatically take her side. Shinichi faces down Gajeel and tells him the exact same thing. I just thought that was weird because it sounded like Hime agreed with Gajeel and thought she should’ve looked harder for him too ("Yes, I should have," said Hime, frowning with regret. There were many things she should've done in the past but now she only had regrets.). Instead of apologizing or trying to make up for it, though, she immediately threatens right back that she’s under Shinichi and Leon’s protection, and they also say that no matter what she did they’ll take her side because she’s their friend. When even she admits, at least to herself and the reader, how she was wrong.

Also, the main members of Team Showa are the new leaders of the Vongola syndicate thinger. That would seem like a gateway to bigger battles and whatnot. The handling seemed a little uncertain, though.

* At the end of one of the last few chapters we find out the previous leaders, the ones Team Showa’s replacing, have located GS’s major bases and sound like they were planning on a full-scale blitz of Gin-Shocker. But then nothing really happened. The kids got sworn in as their replacements and went back to school. It was like that was written, then it was decided it wasn’t time to shake up the status quo that much yet or the story would be over too fast.

* There was also some mention of an entrance exam to make sure Team Showa was ready for full induction into the upper echelons of Vongola membership, but based on the time frame seen in the story a couple months would’ve have to have gone by in between those chapters (it was Halloween before the rescue and the exam was set up for January). And it’s never mentioned again either. Just a chapter of down-time, and then they’re the new leaders of Vongola.

* They found out Yuji’s weird new arm indeed came from him being possessed by a demon. They mentioned getting someone to exorcise it, but again it was never followed up on. Wouldn’t he only have one arm again if it had been? And it would’ve been a ripoff for that to go away so soon after being introduced in any case. I probably would’ve avoided that plot device in the first place (especially with it just being kind of silly at this point, being his third evil mode as I noted).

* We fade out on Shinichi starting his second year at a rebuilt Youkai Academy. I get how it’s meant to represent him coming full circle since the first chapter. But he and his friends are the leaders of an international evil-fighting organization now. Aren’t they in charge of super -important things that’d keep them busy enough without going to school now too?

* And building on the above, almost all of the major dangers the school faced happened because of Team Showa’s presence on campus and the villains targeting them. Really, they probably not only shouldn’t have been allowed back, it probably should’ve gone to show how dangerous Kamen Riders are even for peaceful monsters who don’t want any trouble. At least to those caught in the crossfire. I remember when classes started again summer break, and all the empty chairs there were because of how dangerous the school seemed thanks to Shinichi’s battles. Kurumu said how dumb that was because the school had a Kamen Rider protecting it. Well, they were exactly right.

Yuji can't get drunk? I thought one of his powers was being a drunken master.

That was certainly an arc with a lot of activity, where the story seemed intent on upping the ante for Team Showa. There were some really cool fights, and the chapter dedicated to just the other NUMBERS was nice, letting them show off their own skills, get some new powers and close the book on some of the demons from their pasts. The biggest one of all being Gebok getting whacked, of course, which was a pretty epic fight between him, Shinichi, and all the major girls in Shinichi’s life who’d worried about him all those years.

I did kind of wonder if some members of Team Showa are too big for the kind of threat a Kamen Rider evil organization can regularly provide, though. Leon fought his way in and out without ever touching his changer, and he even beat Battle Angel Alita in the process. In addition to his incredibly amped super mode from the fight with the Jagers, Shinichi’s time control puts him on a par with the most powerful characters in X-men mythology. And for a while there I thought it’d been decided the manakytes’ matured forms were too much for a story like this because they didn’t use them in forever even when fighting really strong Gin-Shocker attackers, then Aphrodite uses hers again when she and Rias’s servants get in trouble.

And in the course of the rescue Yuji got a THIRD evil mode. A third one? He already Abyss King and the “inner beast” mentioned over the side story.

But after he gets saved, he refuses to let Dr. Washam analyze his demonic new arm. Even though he has no idea where it came from, and his girlfriends saw it just grow out of his shoulder out of nowhere before he went sadistic apeshit on the monsters they were fighting. And Yuji totally refuses to think about where this thing came from, and everybody jumps in on his side, and that’s the end of it? No, no way. Not with the job he’s being set up for and all the damage he could do if a random demonic arm turns out to indeed be demonic.

Oh, and the Scooby Doo Vongola guardian was funny.
