I seriously love this story and how you write. While I would tolerate some grittiness, I can appreciate that you don't want to write that way and can appreciate how you only allude to the darker matters of the world. For example, I really liked the "strange fruit" reference. That being said, given how subtle and clean your writing is, I think this story could be rated T. It might bring you some more readers.

This story is great but the chapters are so long! I've been reading for days and am only halfway through!
