Alethro chapter 20 . 7/12/2015 Hello, I ( u/Plailect) am the unofficial fanfiction reviewer for the r/httyd subreddit. I read an httyd fanfiction every couple weeks and write a review to talk about my thoughts and opinions. Each post includes a link to the next thing I'm reading so people can follow along and share their thoughts and the previous posts for people unfamiliar with my posts. I am going through the process of linking old posts to the authors as feedback. These are old and may be outdated now. You can find your post here: r/httyd/comments/2p8g7v/standing_against_standing_between_fanfiction_part/ Thanks for your time, ~Plailect |
mordreek chapter 20 . 3/8/2015 Berkians are probably the best example of quick-time repairmen in their world. After centuries of repairing dragon attacks, I imagine they have plenty of specialize techniques and tricks up their...helmets. Good to see Headsnapper is still chief, Craigfist was a disaster of deplorable quality. Can't say I'm surprised they treated the Seer like that, the Gunnar are a very brutal tribe. "You are with us or against us." sums them up pretty damn well. It also gives them an excuse to party, not that Berkians lack for an excuse most days. "Didn't kill those little shits the twins in their sleep." is probably the start of many of a drinking binge. And I am so glad you did not spell out the entirety of Gobber's poetry attempt, I'd had to have to gouge out my own eyes, it'd be uncomfortable. The rest of the gang sounds about right, love Toothless totally dominating the "dart board" without even trying. Hiccup starts to understand the saying, "You can never go home again." or "you can't step in the same river twice." Experience is a permanent change. Kinda figured that Saga and Nestor would make an interesting pair, they'll keep each other on their toes. That's assuming, of course, that the impending Ragnorok won't be keeping them busy. There are few things more annoying than the feeling of a recently defeated villain going "I told you so" even if he/she is dead. Can't really expect Hiccup to do anything else, he has the chance to do something and it'd kill his heart to be on the sidelines. Hence why Astrid needs a good boot to the head to get her to realize she should be going with him. |
mordreek chapter 19 . 3/8/2015 When facing a living super-weapon, sneaky kinda loses it's meaning. I'm with with Hiccup on the "brain shrieking and gibbering in terror whilst fleeing to the hills" It's actually a sensible move for Cervantes to try to co-op Hiccup, an enemy converted is an enemy defeated as they say. That and he's kinda helpless without meaty puppets, with the whole failsafe and all. The Seer is here (heh rhyme) and where issss...Astrid! There you are, here to rescue your eventually frustration-murder victim. (the technically term is "husband-to-be") Nice try Stoick, but in the face of your son coming back alive...again, you cannot be your namesake. |
mordreek chapter 18 . 3/8/2015 Not so easy from the front seat, is it Snotlout? Good to see him actually grow up a bit and not behave like a petulant child...like the twins. Love the fact that the twins do the vast majority of crazy stuff to try to get under Hiccup's skin, no easy task after all the patience he has had to develop. I know it's messed up, but when Fishlegs panicked at the Monolith's attack, the thought of "IIIII've seen enough hentai to know where this is going." Yes, I am a bad, bad man. No I am NOT sorry :P Oh boy, lots of big metal beasties...Having dragons is starting to look pretty smart, eh Berk? Metal skeletons huh? Whoever designed the Monolith was really keen on psychological warfare... and durability. Things won't be the same for Berk after this, that's for sure. All that myssteel and with Hiccup's knowledge on how to smith it... they just became the most effective military force in the world in term of force multiplication. It actually starts to be scary the more you think about it. I like Hiccup's plan, it's simple and easy to remember. I repeat my earlier concerns about Berkians armed with myssteel...if Stoick's reaction is anything to go by. Can you imagine the twins and Snotlout armed like that? I love Snotlout's mental grousing "If this didn't work, Snotlout was totally kicking his butt in Valhalla." and it figures Fishlegs would be too busy geeking out after hearing Arc talk to him. Oh Ruff, you don't have much luck in love in so many of the stories I've read. That was a nice idea about the self-immolation, she'd be decent on a Nightmare. Yeeeaaah, Hiccup, if you survive this little stunt...Astrid is going to come up with new, painful, and prolonged ways of KILLING you. |
mordreek chapter 17 . 3/7/2015 It's never fun being the bait, as far as I'm aware at least. You'd think that a being as old as Arc would be smarter about his revenge. Kinda reminds me of Samara from ME:Stupid, arrogant, and incompetent. There is a reason that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result. Yup, Craigfist is an idiot. The Seer took care of that little problem pretty quick though, nice thinking on her feet there. I do question Arc saving Craigfist, I understand he doesn't like humans much, but there is no reason to pollute the gene-pool like that is there? I had to laugh at "you what else doesn't help moral? The island-sized war machine of doom made of myssteel." That's a pretty good argument ender right there. The tone alternated between mockingly-peppy and deadpan, both were hilarious. Oh dear, nobody is willing to take the Seer's words at face value, what could POSSIBLY be the reason? I know she is supposed to have had a hard life but I still can't muster any sympathy for a game player, regardless of her intentions. Good to see some resolution of the issues between Arc and Nestor, took a figurative *wonk* on the head but it happened...just in time for Berk to be attacked, yeeesh. |
mordreek chapter 16 . 3/4/2015 More sneaking, more imminent violence...I'm beginning to notice a theme here, just little one though. The fight ain't going to be easy, no matter how effect their plan is. Can't call the Gunnarr cowards, however stupid and gullible they may be. The Seer herself could use a break from having her head up her...I mean the self-induced colonoscopy. Speaking of the Gunnar, I'm guessing being stuck between 2 dragons is worse than being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Lots more boom for one thing. Ah, the Seer finally stands up for herself, it's been a long time coming I'm guessing. Then there's Cervantes, I guess trying to prevent a all consuming evil (by becoming one yourself) doesn't leave much time for cardio? At this point, there is nothing redeeming about him, this is one of those cases where an execution is completely warranted. Not bad boss fight, but Cervantes really messed up by ignoring ANY part of Hiccup or Toothless. Then again, he knew what buttons to push to get away. Not surprised to find out the Seer was the daughter of Stonefist, dysfunctional family much there? |
mordreek chapter 15 . 3/4/2015 Well this proves they were just Cervantes' little thugs, oh the mighty Gunnarr, so much afraid of dragons they sell themselves to a necromancer. Glad to see things didn't come between Hiccup and Astrid, actually he was pretty supportive for her. Good on ya mate. I'm surprised to see Stoic back down like he is, I get his reasons, but it's still a shock to the system. His concern for his people is shoving out everything else. On the other hand, he's also using Stonefist's own words against him, proving himself to be much more subtle than anyone expected. Hahaha, yeah, sneaky is NOT Astrid's strong point. Glad to see the gang all together, it wouldn't be as fun without them. And Snotlout acts...like a good person, we have a changeling people! And of course, Fishlegs wants stats. Sneaky-sneak...IMMINENT VIOLENCE! Yup, that sums up Hiccup and Astrid's rescue strategy pretty good right there. Ok, so the Seer isn't so bad, still don't feel about about feeling suspicious. As is Astrid, sensible female that one. |
mordreek chapter 14 . 3/4/2015 I'd just like to say I called it about the sneaky alliance, pressed the post review button too early by accident, as well as seeing Astrid replacing Hiccup coming. We get to see the exact nature of the craziness that is Cervantes, guy is a few planks short of a longboat, that's easy to see. Stoic is taking the sudden substitution about as well as can be expected. I'd almost pay to see Gobber fight the Seer, it'd be funny to watch with popcorn. Nice bit about the myssteel being able to return to it's owner, good touch. I still don't trust the Seer, she keeps playing games and it's gotten so old it's decrepit. Speaking of games, Astrid outclassed Craigfist so badly she might as well have been dancing around him. |
mordreek chapter 13 . 3/4/2015 Nice to see things coming to a boil...not really. I can't blame Nestor for panicking but there are a LOT of Viking now looking to sharpen their axes on his head. Can't say I'm surprised about Stonefist, man has to be maimed in order to get anywhere with him. Seen the type before. I feel for Stoic, he has to deal with the yutz then come home to Hiccup and his chaos factor. They handled the aftermath pretty well as well, both able to meet halfway and not get caught up in the past. I'm actually with Snotlout for once, breakfast is going to be REALLY interesting, to say the least. And we were right, sneaky treaties, Seers covering their asses so they don't look wrong, and thugs that just want to bash, this morning has it all. |
mordreek chapter 12 . 3/4/2015 Stonefist likes playing with fire, as we can see. Gets a few cheap shots in too, pretty low of him. Then again, that seems to be standard for the Gunnarr, taking jabs just on the safe side of an insult that would have them in a fight. I'm sure with the proper context, the Seer makes perfect sense, right now that ain't much. She has a point about titles becoming great than just the words that make them though, that part was pretty clear. And then she goes after Nestor in all but name, this makes me profoundly suspicious. Add to that the bolas launchers that Cervantes has, and I'm smelling an alliance of deceit here. We do however, get to see some progress on the Hiccup/Astrid front. Riiight up until they invoke Murphy...again. |
