I absolutely love this. I read this ages ago and revisited it today. I love how you got Arthur's character - spot-on I think. And the whole feeling of the Menin Gate ceremony is wonderful - wonderful writing. (It's a place I've personally always wanted to visit.) Also, it was nice to see a Belgium fic - not many around.

This was your first? This is brilliant. I loved the flow of the words and the extreme details. I could feel their emotions; you captured the grief and commemoration beautifully.

Great job!

Rhady chapter 1 . 3/14/2011
He obviously noticed the look on her face, as he quickly said "I wanted to think about the war. I need to remember these men, so I don't make the same mistake again."

Belgium could refer here to the fact that she was against all attacks ob Belgian soil.

She knew, from experience, that the German lines were strong, too strong. She also knew that attacking on the Belgian lowlands was a pure waste of time because even if the British could break though the Germans would only have to retreat a few miles, out of reach of the guns on the salient hills, dig in and they would have a new impregnable front to block the attack. Which was impossible near Luxembourg. A breakthrough there would have a better result then a breakthrough in Ypres: The Germans would have to abandon the country or be trapped.

Yeah, how much hasn't he lost.

She on the other hand lost everything: her industry, her cities and her money. Not to mention all the deported, starved and massacred people of Belgium.

And you know what's more fun: he, and France, turned their backs on her, saying it never happened, that it was just propaganda gotten out of hand.

England said that New-Zealand lost more during the war then Belgium.

France (during the negotiations in Versailles) cried out that if the Belgians wouldn't shut up with their stupid demands he would kill them.

A British reporter noted that during the entire war the Belgians had been brave, but now, because of the events I mentioned above, they had been completely defeated.

So you will understand that Belgium has a very short memory.

PS I'm not saying that it isn't saddening that all these people died, it's even more saddening that they died in vain. A breakthrough in 1916 would have lead to nothing but another massacre.

Sitting the war out like the Belgians did and just letting the enemy get exhausted and then strike would have been a healthier strategy.

PPS If you'd know as much about Belgium during WWI as I do you'd get cynical too.

At least we had a leader with brains.

light soceress chapter 1 . 3/13/2011
its a very nice fic. its flowed pretty nicely. I feel that you could probably flesh out more detail and the plot if you wish to. you could probably utilize more descriptions. you might have slightly ramble at the beginning of the fic. but all in all it was a nice fic.
Herro Kitty chapter 1 . 3/13/2011
:O

I love you so much!

This was so well written and so beautiful ;w;

I've been trying to find a good WWI fanfic for a while...all everyone seems to write is about the Revolutionary War.

Seriously, I think EnglandxBelgium just became my top OTP.

Thank you for sharing! You did wonderfully~
