Heartbreaking. Such great writing that I can really feel their pain.

Grief causes all types of responses. This is not so improbable. Just as long they understand why & are not wracked by guilt, I say whatever helps at that dreadful time. Great writing, by the way.

You, my dear, are an absolute angel. That's probably completely inappropriate to say given the subject of this fic, but I mean it most sincerely. The emotion you've captured her is wonderful, the relationship you capture between the two of them is spot-on, and the little things you've slipped in like 'murmuring something about sweet tea' make it all the more real because we can see what it is they're feeling at this awful time. So heart-breaking, but beautifully done.
