I hope you haven't abandoned this story! I really enjoyed how fleshed-out your characters are and, while I can't say that romance is the main theme in your series, it certainly seems to be a nicely-written romance between the Amazon and the necromancer so far.

Thaddeus chapter 10 . 1/7/2014
It’s a new year which means a new review from me. Please accept this small offering as a mere fraction of what I felt during the course of this last read.

First of all, I just want to tell you how much I enjoyed the actual writing in this book. Usually a story that has an interesting plot and characters can have mediocre writing and still get away with it. However, in this case, I believe the writing is so on par with the story which is quite the feat. This is your best writing yet! I may have noted a few areas in previous books that felt a little rushed or underdeveloped; NOTHING in this book has seemed underdeveloped in the least so far. In fact, I find your descriptive language to be just enough. And it’s not like some novels with a very descriptive nature like say Lord of the Rings, that are a little daunting and difficult to read because of its grand imagery. I find your writing to be very manageable and easy to follow. That’s why I appreciate it so much; there is care written into each action, each thought, each person and yet I don’t find it overwhelming. There may be a few small instances where some descriptors were perhaps a little extraneous: “Blood was omnipresent in this demonic environment as well,” in Chapter 8 (I actually think saying ‘Blood was everywhere” almost seems more impactful since it’s so direct). But truthfully, I find these instances to be few and far between. As I said, the vast majority of this book has been written expertly!

I just wanted to provide a few of my favorite passages to demonstrate my enthusiasm for your increasingly improving writing style:

“[…] The slicked rage returning to shimmer just under the threshold of my emotional control.” Chapter 4

“The look on his face would rival an ornery ostrich interrupted mid-mating season.” Chapter 4

“A sliver of pain was beginning to stir up in me like an anguished, fiery pinprick, starting around my heart. I'd only briefly admitted to him that I cared. I hadn't breathed a word about being in love with him and still his face was as hard and impassive as granite.” Chapter 5

What I also admire about this series is how you really seem to know exactly where you want to go with this story. That is, I think sometimes authors (and probably professional authors as well) sometimes might be a little too influenced by their fans. That’s not to say it’s bad to consider their input; occasionally fans will point out something you didn’t realize. And truth be told, that’s the whole point of a review! But sometimes when I read through comments of stories I’m reading I find that there is a direct correlation between what reviewers say “should happen” and what actually does. I know a lot of us (myself including) are clamoring for more Piricus/Chyemme but I think you’re right in taking it very slow. He’s a stubborn person. He’s proud. It’s going to take something monumental to move him. You’re the creator of these people and I think you know what’s best. I get the sense that you have very specific plans for ALL the characters and for the most part you’re sticking pretty close to that. If so, I admire that greatly and think you should continue.

One of my favorite chapters was Chapter 2 and finding out how our resident necromancer killed those assassins. We’ve known about it the entire time, but somehow, seeing it (reading it) makes the whole situation seem so much darker. He seems so much more worthy of that trademark egoism he’s been toting around. It was terrifying and gruesome and exactly the type of thing that would come out the Diablo franchise which is why I thought it was so appropriate. You named all the Assassins too, got a glimpse of their personalities so that when he annihilated them it seemed all the more chilling. I get the impression that this part of the story will eventually be a counterpoint to how he’s changed by the end of the series.

He is not the only one changing either. Our good lady Amazon is becoming a little sassy and jaded like her counterpart. I like how the other characters are noticing she’s acting different: The Sorceress says, “You've been extremely dark and brooding lately. I think you've been spending way too much time around jackass." There was some of the Piricus-like selfishness creeping into Chyemme’s thoughts regarding those ashes which, although it sounds odd, I quite enjoy. She’s dynamic. She’s changing. Her environment is actively shaping her personality which I think really speaks to her humanity. Also that there is another actual, real, sensible reason for her “moodiness” and I believe that has to do with her mental gifts (as the druid pointed out). I just find a lot of times in books and movies, some characters begin acting differently for seemingly no reason at all. And what’s more, none of the characters seem to even acknowledge it (see every character in the “Glee” franchise).
But I don’t see that happening here. Although the Amazon is acting out of character, you have not written her out of character, if that makes sense. There’s a legitimate reason: demonic interference with her mental abilities AND her increased exposure to the necromancer’s “dark and brooding” nature as you described it. It’s believable.

Speaking of Chapter 6, it was another of my favorites. When you described Ormus magically pulling off Chyemme’s bracer I thought I was going to be sick! It is was so disgusting and gross and I applaud you for having the guts to write it. Additionally, I loved a lot of the dialogue in this chapter – particularly Xialah and Alkor. You’ve written it in such a way I get a real sense of how their voices sound and the types of inflections they use. Alkor especially made me laugh out loud.

What I also really enjoy is how you’ve sort of made a mess of all the relationships; that is I thought at the beginning that everyone was going to fit into these cookie cutter molds: The rogue & the warrior, paladin and assassin, sorceress & Sorcerer, and of course, amazon and necromancer. But I love the gradation on how well each of these work; the former two obviously working considerably less well than the latter two. But it makes it feel much more true-to-life. In the real world, not everyone pairs off so nicely, there is heartbreak, there are unrequited feelings. I like that it’s messy.

On the thread of character relationships, I noticed a great kinship between the druid and the amazon lately. In the past, I admit to not having so much interest in his storylines, but I think the more I see of him, the more he grows on me. And I don’t know if this was purposeful or not, but I am seeing his relationship with Xialah (not “relationship” relationship, but personal relationship) as drawing on a amazon/necromancer parallel a bit. I am curious if this was intentional and if so how it is serving the bigger picture, so to speak.

I did notice what might be a slight continuity error. In chapter one, when Chyemme has her vision, both Celeste and Marcus are in a team with a sorcerer named Cyrim (Hard C or Soft C?). However, in the first book, in chapter eleven, Celeste is quoted saying to Andariel, "Some of our sisters may have fallen, but there will always be those who defy you, like me, Ormus and Marcus!" This makes me think that they were originally supposed to be the same person?

Maybe my favorite chapter so far was the previous one. I hesitate to say I “like” the rogue’s new attitude, but I can’t deny I find it intriguing. Seeing such animosity from her and the amazon, (enough to nearly cause a duel of their own) was kind of new and I’m interested to see it explored more. That is, how far can she take it? Is this a permanent change? Will she actually endanger our amazon heroine? All things I’m anticipating finding out.

The Crossing of the Bows was a brilliant chapter arc and I have a hunch, whenever there is an update, we’ll be having a nice little comparison with the melee competition between the boys. But I think the star of this chapter was the final battle. I am able to admit that I would have never been able to think of it. I’m glad the eye was actually embedded in the creature and not just stuck in a trunk. It was so much more exciting than playing (which is something because I, obviously, enjoy playing the game very much). It was a very twisted way of portraying the quest and I love that.

Glad to have finally solved the mystery of the tattoo – that one was bugging me for awhile. It makes me wonder if that family symbol was on the piece of parchment that got torched. AND if it were that would mean the lady necromancer would have the same mark. Does the Darkblade family have another member?

Although that one mystery is solved, there are so many other ones buzzing about. There’s the issue with the necklace. I hardly believe you’d waste your time writing about it if it weren’t important. This makes me think Xialah is more important than we’ve been lead to believe as well, but I don’t know how. Will Chyemme tell Scorpious about her taking the potion? What did she see in her Mephisto vision? What does Piricus’s dream mean? And what exactly did Cloudyous do to get that map? Hmmm?

Also, I’m still mulling over the mystery of Chyemme’s would-be Assassin. I’m not so certain it was Viz Jaq Taar. I won’t lie to you; I have been considering a number possible other theories (Honestly, most fanfiction I forget very soon after reading it, but this series definitely leaves an impression).

All these things and more I am eagerly anticipating knowing. I know it’s been awhile since the last update, but since I discovered this series only recently I think it’s only fair that I have to wait a little while, like other readers had to do before me. I’m sure whatever it is, it’ll be worth the wait. Many accolades to you Bladed Dragon, for having the best Diablo fanfiction out there!
