Oh vindication, this is so, so sweet.

I did wonder about the message, since Sam would never ever tell Dean about it and the second thoughts in fear that Dean would confirm he was a monster, but I like the way you by-pass it by using Soulless!Sam (who really deserved more screen time he was awesome). And yes, I like that in here Dean gets a well-deserved emotional kick in the balls and angst, after all the dick-ish moves he pulls on Sam. Especially after the way every other fudging character (Castiel I am looking at you) forgets the first seal and Dean's ten years as a torturer in order to blame the kid who got taken advantage of and was thoroughly screwed with in every sense of the word, because*of course* he *had* to be evil, a mistake, pffff, absolutely *no* extenuating circumstances at *all*. And even then, it's not as if Sam didn't overpay for his MISTAKE.
Humph.

I've been going through different takes of Dean learning about the message he supposedly left, and this has been the best one yet.
At first I was a bit reluctant because of the choice to make it happen with a soulless!Sam but in the end it was the best thing about this story. As much as I've been wanting to see Sam getting his forgiveness and Dean assuring his brother that everyhting said in that awful voicemail wasn't true, this take was simply heartbreaking and it felt so real and desperate.
Dean not having the chance to say anything that could make it all better because Sam wasn't really there at that moment, the cold logic surrounding the way soulless!Sam brought it all up and gave his reasonings, the pain when Dean realized the true weight that damned message carried, and all along the desperation of it all being too late made it just tragic.

Wow-that was pretty incredible. I always wondered if they'd ever adressthis, and I hpe they do in the future, but you made this perfect.

I've had an idea like this in my head for a while, now. But reading this, I don't think I'll even try, because this is so supremely heartbreaking that I could never do it justice. You always have this way with words that never fails to take my breath away, and I really, really hope you continue writing for this series.

Great idea! I love the notion that Sam would ask this out of simple curiosity when he'd never have broached the subject if he had a soul. And such a painful reaction from Dean, but spot on. Awesome.
