I swear I read this a year ago in another website... Great work explaining the wolf. Some people like to think Sanosuke and him had the same past which is why they think Saitou mentors Sano. For a time I did too, but knowing a little bit more now and reading your story, I think your account is more reasonable. :)

As much as I like SxS fanfics I must admit this fic is the best characterization of Saitou I think I have seen on the net. If not the best, definitely one of the top three. Wonderful piece. One thing I thought I'd mention concerning history; Saitou was actually fortunate to get Tokio since their match was set up by the Daimyou (like Lord) Matsudaira Katamori, whom she was related to! This little detail, though, does not detract from your piece at all.

I just now read the entire fic all the way through and must say, you've done some serious mind analysis. Seeing as those kinds of fics are my favorite, I enjoyed this fic immensely. Saitoh isn't the easiest of characters to analyze, but he certainly is one of the most intriguing. The quiet moments in there between the two shows that their companionship is a grudging respect and not an outright hate like most people portray them as. It began and ended with cigarettes, veryfitting ) Keep on writing!

This fic certainly hold some excellent insight into Saitoh's character. Pitting Sano and Saitoh against each other is one of the funnest ways to get into both their personalities... and I love the look we got inside the infamous Wolf of Mibu's head. You entwined fact and fiction so smoothly that I wouldn't doubt you've hit upon the 'real' Saitoh that most writers have difficulty touching. I also loved the "Aku, Soku, Zan" and Sano's shirt reference. (I've been laughing about that joke to myself for a long long time! "Oh so THAT'S why Saitoh can't stand Sano!" *snicker*)

Best of all, was the show of 'friendship' in the very end. One precious cigarette... That says it all, ne?
