Well, it might have helped if Harry hadn't mouthed off at Snape the very first day (which was really quite uncharacteristic of him, given how he was squashed by Dudley in class at home).

And frankly, being like his mother isn't going to help Harry-Lily hosed Snape pretty badly when she didn't care if he was nearly eaten by a werewolf-even before the Worst Memory she was far more interested in James Potter's heroism rather than her 'friend's' welfare.
