Aw, I love Bernard! I felt a teeny bit cheated that the movie didn't let us see the real Bernard transform into a good guy, but that Megamind just used his face as a mask.

I really like this sweet one-shot. The metaphor of the eyes, and how different Megamind's Bernad eyes were alive and fiery compared to the real life Bernard's eyes was powerful.

I think it would make it even more powerful if you ended on that etaphor too. Made some reference tohis eyes growing brighter or something. Just a suggestion!

Loved your fic! Believable dialogue, realistic outcome, wonderfully snarky Bernard, and you used so many different adjectives, adverbs and quirky verbs ('drooled' was my favorite...yes) to describe his typical mannerisms that it never got stale.

Roxanne's comparison of the two variations of Bernard was great, and one I made myself upon repeated viewings. The half-liddedness is indeed almost creepy. There were other differences too, though-Real Bernard keeps his eyebrows down at his browline, his glasses as far down on his nose as he can manage, his mouth small and turned down, and his posture hunched. The amazing thing about Megamind's version of Bernard-at least in the film-is that the very first action he takes as Bernard is to stand up ramrod-straight, open his eyes as wide as he can, and raises his eyebrows halfway to his hairline, with his glasses set around the middle of his nose. It really set the tone for the difference between them and I can't stop geeking out over what a good choice the artists/animators made there. So when Roxanne muses that the deadness in his eyes hurts her now, it really is a very heartfelt moment.

"Wow, you sure know how to make people feel really well about themselves..." There's a delightful quirkiness to that line that comes from the use of 'well' instead of 'good' and it was a good choice to use it. I glee'd a little over it.

The way he reacted at the end, with that little smile, made me think that he rather stopped listening to Roxanne as soon as she touched his cheek, and simply went into daze-mode. Otherwise, I don't see him as the kind who would just swallow something like that and actually let it make him feel better. He clearly has self esteem issues, if his posture and expression are any indication, and people with self esteem issues tend to ignore people who try to build them up with praise alone, since words can only go so far, but once people show them other kindnesses they might not have received before, they tend to gravitate toward those people. Bernard is probably no different. The little bits of his anguish that he does give her before the final interaction between them are really powerful, and I agree, his apology definitely feels more like an 'oops, I shouldn't have revealed that' than an apology, and it must have taken a lot to get them out of such a snarky, reticent guy. Kudos to Roxanne for her nosy reporting skills. His uncertainty at human contact is adorable and really drives home that maybe he's just upset at his lack of social skills. Wonder how he got to be such a black hole of misery?

There's definitely not enough about Bernard in the fandom, which made me enjoy your ficlet all the more. In a vast sea of Roxanne, Megamind and Minion-related work, thank you for giving me something to nibble on!
