Astrid isn't the leader of the group. Hiccup is. We saw that when he went into battle against the red death leading everyone else.
Don't take this the wrong way. But I don't get why some writers have to elevate the role of Astrid in their fictions - as if her role isn't good enough.

Her official role is the second-in-command among dragon riders while Hiccup leading the group. But most of the time they co-lead the group.
Sometimes Hiccup has to do Hiccupy things(innovation, planning, daydreaming?) that without Astrid wouldn't be possible. She's also the support system for him. Without her Hiccup wouldn't be the kind of leader he is. And most importantly she keeps Twins and Snotlout in line.

In a word: sweet. And tastefully written. Nice nod to the movie at the end. I think the only thing that threw me off was "viking prince" as I can't really imagine Astrid talk-thinking that way. Sounds too soft for something that comes from her.

But! Everything else was a pleasure to read. You got their dialogue down to a T - Astrid being supportive without any molly-coddling and depressed!Hiccup. Good job!
