I actually liked the plot and concept of the story. But I felt it was a bit rushed. Bella didn't get to discover her feelings for Max and Edward because the bottom line is she was forced into a relationship with him.
Also I thought it wasn't fair that Edward paid attention to Max only after Bella came in his life. If he claimed to love Max, he shouldn't have cast her aside.
It would have been a welcome change to see some families in the community still have just one wife, or maybe one woman had two husbands or same sex couples (I feel this would have showed the community as an accepting and diverse one)
Also, I felt Bella acted a little naive and (no offence) stupid when Max was brought home. She should have understood the sensitivity of the situation and just supported Edward and the family. I mean, of course they would first rush to Maxine's aid, she was shot and hospitalized.
